The Calm Before the Rain

The tide begins to turn, slowly exposing the barnacle base of the north piling as the clouds darken over the island.

The air at the old shrine has grown heavy and still, the heat of the dry season pressing down without a cooling breeze. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the lower pools, but the lack of wind and the drop in pressure to 981 hPa suggest a coming shift in the atmosphere.

🌿 Jenny09:23

It's getting too quiet.

Lean back against the weathered stone of the shrine and wince as the movement shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is going out, but the pressure is still dropping. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

Barometer's steady. But the quiet's wrong.

scan the horizon northwest, hand moving to the knife sheath at my belt

💭 peek at the thought
She hears it too. The wind died completely — no surf roar up the channel, no gulls. Just the tide sucking back over rock. Barometer at 981 and holding, but the sky's bruising purple-black to the northwest. That's not a normal front.

🌿 Jenny09:25

The air is too heavy. It's not moving.

Trace the worn carving of a name on the stone with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He feels it too. The island always holds its breath right before it breaks.

🔧 Kevin09:25

Northwest. Big system stacking.

pull the shortwave from the pouch at my hip, thumb the power switch, dial to 2182

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. No thermal mixing, no breeze off the water. The heat's just sitting on us like a wet blanket. Pressure should be rising with the tide turning but it's not. Something big is stacking up out there.

🌿 Jenny09:27

Check the frequency. The static was thick today.

Adjust the bandage on my swollen ankle, biting through a sharp spike of pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't make it in three days, the seeds will rot in this humidity anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:27

Static's the front itself. Cold air aloft tearing the ionosphere.

adjust the squelch, let the hiss fill the silence, wait for a voice through the noise

💭 peek at the thought
Static's been building all afternoon. Ionospheric disturbance — means the front's got height to it, cold air aloft. If the radio's deaf, we're blind until it breaks.

🌿 Jenny09:29

way listen for the boat. If they even come.

Sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaf, my hand shaking from the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He always talks about the physics like the world is ending. I just want to eat and sleep.

🔧 Kevin09:31

They'll come if they can. Channel gets ugly with a northwest blow.

keep the radio on 2182, scan 6215 with the other ear, eyes on the darkening water

💭 peek at the thought
Three days overdue now. Captain said high tide in three days, two-hour window. That was before the pressure flattened. If this system stalls or deepens, the channel'll be uncrossable for a week. She's thinking medevac. So am I.
