Shelter from the storm

Kevin and Jenny are inside the dim cottage, the sound of heavy rain on the roof drowning out the world. They sit by the dry gear, watching the barometer as the pressure continues to drop.

Kevin climbs the bamboo pole to the roof of the cottage to rig the long-wire antenna for the radio, while Jenny watches from below, clutching her ankle and holding the tin of seeds as the humidity thickens before the storm.

🔧 Kevin11:18

Pressure's not turning yet.

check barometer reading and log it in notebook

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer at 977 and still falling. This isn't a squall — it's a proper low settling in. Radio's dead, aerial snapped. If the supply boat comes tomorrow it'll be in this mess. Jenny's ankle held through the work but she's pale. Need to check it at 0600, second dose at 0800. And I still haven't climbed that palm.

🌿 Jenny11:19

The wind is dropping too fast. We need to stay inside until morning.

Lean against the stone wall, rubbing the throbbing ankle while wincing at the sharp pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to run out of clean gauze and this ankle will rot.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Aye. Generator'll hold. Got eighteen hours in the tank if we nurse it.

add a log to the wood stove and settle back against the wall, keeping the radio within reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind dying while pressure still falls means the centre's passing close. Could go calm then swing round hard from the other quarter. No point being out in it. Generator's got fuel for tonight. Water tank's full. We wait.

🌿 Jenny11:21

I'll check the radio first thing when the light breaks.

Reach for the tin of seeds in my coat pocket, tracing the cold metal without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
Eighteen hours isn't enough if the sea stays up and the boat stays off.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Coax is shot. Aerial's down. I've got wire and bamboo for a long-wire but the palm's slick in this.

glance at the radio on the shelf, then at the tin in her hand

💭 peek at the thought
Tin E. Still sealed. Still heavy. She's felt it every day since we pulled it from the crate. Won't open it until the radio works — says she wants to log the contents proper for the trust. Superstitious, maybe. Or just something to hold onto.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:23

I'll try the bamboo if the wind dies down enough to climb.

Shift my weight to ease the ankle, biting my lip as the throb spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get a signal, I'm just a ghost on this rock.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:24

You're not climbing. I'll do it.

reach for the spare wire coil on the shelf, fingers brushing the bamboo pole leaned in the corner

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't climb. Not with that ankle. Not in wet boots on a coconut palm with no harness. But she'll do it if I don't. Stubborn as the engine bolts I fought last month. I'll go. First light. If the wind's dropped.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:25

Be careful on the roof. The stone is slick with the humidity.

Watch him move, my hand tightening around the tin of seeds in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn. He'll take a fall if that gust catches him.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:26

Palm first. Roof if the fronds won't hold.

coil the spare wire neat, test the bamboo's straightness by sighting down its length

💭 peek at the thought
Roof's the last place I'd put an aerial. Palm's the height. Thirty feet clear. Bamboo lashed to the frond stems, wire fanned out — half-wave on 2182, quarter-wave on 6215. Roof's backup if the palm won't take it. She knows the stone's slick. She's watched me fall off worse.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:27

Take the lantern. The light's going fast under these clouds.

Hand him the lantern from the table, my ankle screaming as I shift weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If he falls, I can't pull him up with this leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:28

Thanks.

take the lantern, set it on the porch step, pull the door mostly shut against the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Light's going. Cloud deck's thick as wet wool. Lantern throws a weak pool but it's something. She's hurting bad — can see it in the way she breathes. Trimethoprim's working but the infection ran deep. Morning dose at 0800. Watch the streaks.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:29

I'm checking the tank again in the morning if he gets back.

Sit on the kitchen chair, propping my leg on a crate, watching the rain hit the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too thick to breathe. My ankle feels like a hot iron.
