Evening Heat and Rising Tide

They sit together on the porch, the heat of the day still radiating from the stone as they plan for the morning.

The tide is receding quickly, exposing the slick, algae-covered rocks of the lower shelves. The air is heavy with the humidity of a coming storm, though the barometer continues its steady drop. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt and drying sea beet lingers as they prepare for the morning ahead.

Tomorrow. Generator 0600 to 1000, no later. Fish trap at low tide — 0730 roughly. Your third trimethoprim at 0800 with broth. After that, I check the dock pilings at slack. You stay off the ankle.

sit on the porch step beside her, forearms on knees, watching the barometer needle through the kitchen window

💭 peek at the thought
She's waiting for me to say what tomorrow looks like. The generator ration, the trap, her dose — I know the list. But the barometer's holding 980 and the supply boat's ten days out. If the front stalls like the fax said, we burn fuel we don't have running the pump for the tank. Need to tell her the plan straight.

I'll try. If the generator doesn't cough, I'll check the radio anyway.

make a sketch of the sea beet morphology I saw yesterday in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by hot pliers, and that ridge is just mocking me with its sea beet.

Radio's fine. Coax splice held. If the front stalls, the fax comes through 0800 on 2182. You copy it from the kitchen table.

reach over and tap the notebook edge with two fingers, quiet

💭 peek at the thought
She'll do more than try. She'll crawl to the hilltop if the radio crackles. The sketch in the margin — salt gland gradients at elevation, the way the leaves thicken past the spray line — she drew it while her ankle wept. Stubborn as the coral on the pilings.

I know. I'll have the pencil ready.

debride the ankle infection with the tweezers and antibiotic ointment.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the radio is so simple, but the salt is eating that coax faster than he realizes.

🔧 Kevin12:28

Tweezers need a flame after. Don't wrap it tight tonight — let it breathe.

stand slow, joints stiff, and go inside for the blue ibuprofen bottle and a mug of water

💭 peek at the thought
She says it light but the tweezers are on the porch table, tips blackened from this morning. She'll sit in the last light and pick at the wound like she's cleaning a carburetor — methodical, no flinch. The ointment's nearly gone. Metronidazole blister pack empty. Five doxycycline left. She knows the count better than me.

🌿 Jenny12:29

I'll keep the bandage loose.

apply the ointment and wrap the ankle loosely with clean gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the flame, but the air is too humid to let it really breathe.
