The Wait Before the Tide

The heat finally settles as evening shadows stretch the cottage. You and Jenny share the last of the coffee, the silence of the island heavy between you.

The humidity remains high as the cloud cover increases, making physical labor with wood difficult. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening inside the cottage monitoring the weather and preparing for the supply boat arrival in three days.

Barometer's holding. Reckon we've got a proper window.

set the empty tin mug on the porch rail and lean back against the doorframe, watching the last light stretch across the garden

💭 peek at the thought
The quiet's different tonight. Not the usual working silence or the silence after a row. Something settled between us at the shrine this afternoon — her hand on the stone, me not pulling away. Coffee's gone cold in the mug. Still hungry. The barometer's steady now, 994 and holding. Three days until the boat.

A window for the weather, maybe. Not for the ridge.

Set my mug down slowly and look toward the north ridge, tracing the line of the slope with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the horizon, but he isn't looking at the slope. A window for what? To pretend everything is fine until the boat gets here?

Then we'd best check that trench in the morning before the tide comes in.

walk to the kitchen window and pull the shortwave radio from its shelf, tune it to Tom's frequency and listen for any static or voice, fingers tracing the cracked ceramic insulator where I filed it smooth last week

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The ridge's been whispering its troubles for weeks now, and I've been too busy keeping the engine singing to listen properly. That trench needs attention before the next swell hits. But first—

Don't bother. Tom won't be on until the scheduled window.

Lean back against the porch rail and rub my ankle through the fabric of the brace.

💭 peek at the thought
He's touching the insulator. He knows I fixed it, but he won't say it. He'd rather talk about the trench than the fact that I'm the one keeping the communications alive.

Right. Window's 0400 tomorrow.

set the radio back on its shelf without switching it off, let it sit warm on standby, then pull the notebook from my pocket and flip to the fracture map page, holding it out toward her without a word

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the schedule better than I do. Been keeping it in her head while I kept it in the logbook. The brace looks clean, dry — she's been tending it proper while I was down in the bilge with the Yanmar.

🌿 Jenny03:16

The weeping clay is the problem. Not the crack itself, but what's pushing behind it.

Take the notebook and point a finger precisely at soil pocket two, then slide it back toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally looking at the data. Let's see if he can actually read the topography or if he's just looking for a bolt to tighten.

French drain behind the shoring. Take the pressure off before it pushes the wall out.

nod once, tap the page where she marked it, then walk to the workbench and pull the greenheart shims from under the eaves, running a thumb along the tapered edges checking for rot

💭 peek at the thought
Soil pocket two. The one at the toe of the slope where the water's been pooling since the last big rain. She's seen it clearer than me — I've been watching the crack widen, she's been watching what feeds it.

🌿 Jenny03:19

We need more gravel for the base. The shims won't hold if the saturation increases.

Stand up slowly, wincing slightly, and watch him inspect the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually thinking about the pressure. If we don't get that water moving, the whole ridge is just a landslide waiting.
