The Calm Before the Storm

The air in the cottage grows heavy as the wind begins to whistle through the eaves. Jenny lies on the bed, the fever of her infection finally breaking into sweat while Kevin watches the barometer needle drop lower.

Kevin braved the steady rain to secure the garden tarps against the rising wind and tide. Jenny stayed inside the cottage, managing her throbbing ankle and resting as the atmospheric pressure continued to fall.

Jenny, I'm going to check the tarp on the garden beds. The wind's picking up and we need those seedlings sheltered.

walk to the garden and check the tarp corners, re-stake any lifted sections with timber strips and secure with remaining bamboo stakes

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I can patch things. Her fever's breaking but that means the poultice isn't cutting deep enough. Need to get clean water and check if the antibiotics are working before the storm hits.

🌿 Jenny04:19

Be careful with the stakes, the soil is like soup right now.

Jenny shifts against the pillow and watches to the rain intensifying against the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches the wind, the heirloom seedlings are gone into the mud.

Won't drive them. Using the cribbing stones as deadmen. The ground won't hold anything lighter.

walk to the garden, inspect tarp corners, secure lifted sections with timber strips weighted by cribbing stones from the garden wall pile

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's already weeping at the spring trench — same soup here. If I drive stakes hard they'll just pull out. Need to use the cribbing stones as deadmen instead.

🌿 Jenny04:21

Just make sure the edges don't tear, the wind is getting sharp.

Jenny closes her eyes and listens to the rhythmic drumming of the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks stones will hold a tarp when the whole ridge is turning to slurry.

🔧 Kevin04:21

Edges first. I'll batten the windward side double.

secure the windward tarp edges with double batten strips and weight each corner with two cribbing stones, check the leeward side for flutter points

💭 peek at the thought
Edges first. The wind gets under a loose corner and the whole sail goes. I've seen it take a roof off a wheelhouse in the Bay. She's burning up but she's still tracking the details.

🌿 Jenny04:23

Don't stay out too long, the rain is turning to sleet.

Jenny pulls the blanket up to her chin, feeling the throb in her ankle sync with the thunder.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind gets under that, the whole thing will rip into the sea.
