The Pressure Drops
Kevin and Jenny sit on the edge of the dock watching the tide begin its slow turn in. The barometer has dropped to 988 hPa and the air is heavy with the scent of salt as water laps against the newly installed fourth plank.
At dawn on the dock, the barometer pressure drops steadily, signaling an approaching storm. Jenny produces a folded envelope from her oilskin, its wax seal stiff with salt and age. They struggle to open the letter as the humidity rises in the heat.
Fourth plank's solid. Greenheart doesn't rot fast.
Pull the folded envelope from my oilskin pocket and hold it between thumb and forefinger, not offering it, not hiding it. Just letting it exist between us.

The wood is fine. It's the soil that's moving.
Look at the water, tracing the jagged line of the tide with my eyes.

The intercept trench held last night. Rebar and hazel basketwork.
Turn the envelope over in my hands. The wax seal's cracked from salt and pocket sweat.

It won't matter if the rain keeps up.
Tighten my grip on the envelope, feeling the paper edges against my palm.

You read it.
Don't reach for it. Don't pull away. Just watch her fingers on the wax.

It's just a letter, Kevin.
Run my thumb over the dried wax of the seal, feeling the grit of salt underneath.

Open it then.
Let go. The envelope stays in her hand.

I'm trying.
Pry a fingernail under the edge of the wax, feeling for it to snap.
