Night at the cottage

The wind has risen, rattling the shutters. Kevin sits at the workshop bench cleaning the Yanmar pump housing. Jenny is at the kitchen table with her notebook, the heirloom seed tin open beside her. A storm lantern burns on the porch. The barometer reads 993 hPa, steady. Low tide sucks at the reef.

The rain lashes against the cottage from the west, turning the humidity heavy in the air. Kevin and Jenny stay inside to wait out the storm, watching the tide rise against the dock. The work on the brush and the ankle project remains stalled as the wood is too saturated to handle.

🔧 Kevin05:09

Pump's seated. Tell-tale clean at idle. Going to let it run another five minutes at load, then button it up.

throttle the Yanmar up to 1800 RPM, watch the exhaust pulse and temperature gauge, listen for vibration

💭 peek at the thought
The pump's seating clean. No galling on the bronze adapter. Ten minutes at idle and the tell-tale ran steady. That's the first real confirmation in weeks the Yanmar will hold under load. Now the barometer's stuck at 993 and the wind's backing southwest — supply boat's window narrows if the swell builds on the crossing. Tom's letter still in the drawer. Didn't open it yesterday. Won't tonight either. Not until the engine's proven at sea.

Don't push it too hard. The rain is coming through the cracks anyway.

Sketch the fracture lines on the north ridge in the notebook, noting the widening gap area the Carex transect.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for a calm night; if that boat doesn't show tomorrow, the ridge will be a mudslide.

🔧 Kevin05:11

Temp's holding. Oil pressure good. Five minutes.

keep the engine at 1800 RPM, watch the gauges, feel for any vibration through the mounting bolts

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the cracks — wind's driving rain horizontal now, finding every gap in the cottage stonework. But the Yanmar needs load to prove the bronze adapter seats under heat and pressure. Idle doesn't tell you what 1800 RPM will. Temperature's holding 82°C. Oil pressure steady. No vibration through the mounts. Five more minutes, then I'll kill it and call it done.

🌿 Jenny05:12

Keep an eye on that temp. It's climbing.

Check the heirloom seed tin for moisture, making sure the packets stay dry before the rain hits.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pump fails now, we're stranded on this rock when the storm rolls in.

🔧 Kevin05:12

Thermostat should've opened at 82. Tell-tale's strong. Giving it two more minutes.

watch the temperature gauge climb to 86°C, hold throttle steady, listen for any change in engine note

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the gauge closer than I am. 84°C now. 85. Thermostat should open at 82 but the raw water flow's strong — tell-tale's a solid rope. Could be the gauge, could be the thermostat sticking. Either way, not killing it until I see it stabilize or break. Three minutes left on my count.

🌿 Jenny05:13

It's hitting 90, Kevin. Back it off.

Adjust the poultice on my ankle, the throbbing in sync with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
It's getting too hot. If that seal blows, I'm not fixing it in the dark.

🔧 Kevin05:14

Killing it.

pull throttle to idle, watch temp drop, cut ignition, hand on the block feeling heat bleed off

💭 peek at the thought
90°C. Thermostat's stuck or the gauge is lying. Tell-tale's still strong but that's raw water — if the thermostat's not opening, the block's cooking. Not risking the rebuild on a two-minute gamble. Back to idle. Let it settle. Check the stat tomorrow cold.

🌿 Jenny05:15

Check the water. We need to know if the intake held.

Wipe the grease from my hands, looking at the half-finished map.

💭 peek at the thought
way. The silence is louder than the engine.
