The Evening Heavy Heat

The sun has begun to dip, leaving a bruised orange glow over the still water. You sit in the cooling kitchen, waiting for the tension of the day to break.

Kevin and Jenny prepare a soak for Jenny's ankle while boiling water and cooking limpets. They struggle to manage the tasks efficiently due to the heat and lingering pain, watching a pod of dolphins pass off the point.

🌿 Jenny06:01

I'm starving. Is there any salt left for the water?

boil a pot of water on the stove and stir in a handful of salt.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop again. If that ridge goes, the whole north face of the island goes with it.

Top shelf. Tin with the blue lid.

pull out two tin mugs from the cupboard and set them on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's boiling water for limpets again. The tin's on the shelf by the stove — half-full of coarse sea salt we scraped from the evaporation pans last month. Should last us through winter if the supply boat keeps missing.

🌿 Jenny06:03

That's for the mackerel, not the—

point toward the herb jar on the windowsill, then catch myself and gesture toward the wood stove where I keep the sea salt.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt for the water, not for food. He's thinking of the poultice, not the ridge.

Salt tin's on the hearth. Blue lid.

spoon coffee into the mugs while the water heats

💭 peek at the thought
Right. The herb jar's got dried rosemary and thyme from the mainland. The salt tin's on the stove hearth where it stays dry. She's tired — ankle's been bad all week and the ridge work didn't help.

🌿 Jenny06:05

I need it for the soak, not the coffee.

walk over to the stove, take the tin, and dump a generous amount into the boiling water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always three steps ahead of the hunger, and I'm just trying to keep my leg from failing.

🔧 Kevin06:05

Take the mugs. I'll drink mine black.

set the coffee spoon down and pull the tin of corned beef from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle soak. Right. She's been soaking it in warm salt water twice a day since the infection flared. The antibiotics are helping but the swelling's stubborn. Coffee can wait.

🌿 Jenny06:06

Thanks.

take the mugs and set them on the table, then lean heavily against the counter to take the weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Corned beef again. I can taste the grease already.

🔧 Kevin06:06

Sit down. I'll bring it over.

open the tin of corned beef with the church key and scoop fat into the cast iron skillet

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad today. The trench work yesterday — twelve meters of saturated clay in driving rain — she shouldn't have been out there. I should've stopped her. The corned beef's got enough fat to fry the limpets proper. Might help her eat.

🌿 Jenny06:09

Don't rush.

limp to the chair and sink into it, stretching my leg out toicing the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
If I sit too long, the ankle will lock up. But the hunger is screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin06:09

Water's hot. Soak first, eat after.

drop the limpets into the skillet, shells down, and cover with a lid

💭 peek at the thought
The fat's sizzling. Good. Limpets go in shell-down first, steam in their own juice. She needs protein and salt — the antibiotics tear through appetite. The barometer's steady at 994. Might hold through the night.
