Midday at the garden wall

Kevin and Jenny meet at the north end of the garden where the wall meets the slope. The tide is at its lowest, exposing the dock's damaged beam and the sandbar near the south cave. Kevin carries the come-along and the last stainless through-bolt. Jenny has her notebook and a tin mug of cold broth. The barometer reads 978 hPa and rising.

The rain continues to fall against the garden as the tide rises toward the dock. Kevin and Jenny successfully wedge the spruce shims into the gap of the sistered plates, using the come-along to pull the structure tight before the water returns. The alignment is held, though the epoxy is struggling to set in the high humidity.

Fissure runs deep on the north beam. Got the come-along and the last 150mm. Need to pull the sister tight and drive it home before the water comes back.

Walk toward the dock with the come-along over my shoulder, the stainless bolt in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's rising. That's something. Still need to get that bolt through the sistered knee before the tide turns and puts load on the fissure. Jenny's moving slower than she lets on — ankle's not right, hasn't been for days. She'd rather sketch sea-beet than admit it.

Wait. Check the alignment first. If you pull it blind, you'll just wedge it crooked.

Limp after him toward the dock, sipping the cold broth and clutching the notebook to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's rushing. If he doesn't align the grain of the sister plate perfectly, that bolt will just split the beam further.

🔧 Kevin09:30

Right. Let me look at the faces first.

Set the come-along down on the dock planking. Crouch at the fissure, running fingers along the split in the sistered knee, checking how the greenheart plates meet. Turn my head to sight down the bolt hole alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Always is with structure. The greenheart's held this long because we didn't force it. Tide's low enough to see the full split now — can check the faces before I tension anything.

🌿 Jenny09:33

It's weeping on the left. We need a shim of spruce, or the bolt won't take the load.

Squat down beside him, wincing at my ankle, and point to the gap between the two plates.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is too soft. If we don't shim that gap, the tension will just shear the bolts next high tide.

🔧 Kevin09:33

Spruce offcuts by the generator shed. Two pieces, grain straight. Be right back.

Jog back toward the cottage and shed, scanning the ground for the offcut pile near the workbench.

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it cleaner than I do. Left plate's proud by a hair — spruce shim'll seat the bolt true. Got offcuts from the mast step work stacked by the shed.

🌿 Jenny09:35

Hurry. The water is already licking the sandbar.

Watch the tide line, shifting my weight to take the pressure off my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he brings back wet wood, the whole thing is going to rot before the epoxy even sets. The tide is already turning too fast.

🔧 Kevin09:35

Got it.

Grab two straight-grain spruce offcuts from the pile by the shed — each about thumb-thick, eight inches long. Turn and jog back toward the dock, boots slipping on wet grass.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turns faster than I'd like. Sandbar's already going under at the edges. Got maybe twenty minutes before the water's back on the dock face.

🌿 Jenny09:37

Lay them here. I need toaper them to the gap before the tide comes back.

Reach for my pocketknife, bracing myself against the stone wall of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
They look dry enough. If I don't cut them to fit now, we'll be losing the whole beam to the surge.
