The Heavy Air Before Rain

Kevin sits on the porch checking the shortwave radio while the humidity thickens over the flat sky. Jenny sits at the table, soaking her ankle in a basin of saline while monitoring the water level in the tank.

Kevin tests the water tank and finds the pH remains stable despite the rising humidity. Jenny debrides her swollen ankle in a saline bath and prepares a sea beet poultice. Kevin helps her wrap the injury with gauze as the clouds thicken overhead.

Is the radio catching anything but the static, or just the wind?

reaches for the notebook and pencil, winces as she shifts her weight in the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is nearly full, but my ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers. I need to debride this before the boat even gets here.

Static and the French news loop. Coast guard said supply boat diverted two days out. No new ETA.

adjust the squelch knob, then reach for the water test kit on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
The static's thicker than yesterday. Ionosphere's acting up with this pressure dropping. She's favouring the ankle bad — won't put weight on it even seated. The saline's cloudy; needs changing.

It's always two days late when it matters.

stops drawing and stares at the salt-crusted edge of the sea-beet leaf on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days late? That's two more days of this heat and two more days of the ridge washing away.

The beet's got salt burn. You've been planting too close to the windward wall.

pull the water test strip from the kit, dip it in the tank spigot, watch the colour shift

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the boat. The sea-beet leaf's edges are blackening — salt burn from the spray last week. Garden's taking a beating. Her ankle's the least of what's wearing her down.

🌿 Jenny10:23

The soil is too sour for anything but weeds.

pulls her ankle out of the basin, the skin wrinkled and red.

💭 peek at the thought
The wall is not the problem, it's the soil. It won't hold anything today.

🔧 Kevin10:23

Lime beds are 6.8. You logged it yourself last week.

set the used strip aside, pick up the notebook she was drawing in, flip to the last page

💭 peek at the thought
She's quoting me. From three months back when the lime hadn't taken yet. The test strip shows 6.8 — lime beds holding. She knows that. She's testing me, or testing whether I'll notice she's not looking at the garden notebook.

🌿 Jenny10:25

The numbers don't account for the salt in the air.

reaches for the gauze, her hand shaking slightly as she prepares to wrap the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is right, but the salt is getting into everything. Even the seed tin.

🔧 Kevin10:25

Your hand's shaking.

set the notebook down, pick up the gauze roll, hold it out to her — palm up, steady

💭 peek at the thought
The shake isn't from the ankle. It's the ridge. The fracture line she mapped. She's been carrying it alone — the slope moving under the garden wall, the intercept trench not holding. She thinks I haven't noticed the new crack past the stability line. I noticed. I just didn't say.
