← Day 86

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

The Storm Breaks In

The rain turns into a heavy downpour as the barometer continues to drop, forcing a retreat to the cottage.

The rain turns heavy from the west, forcing a quick retreat from the dock. Kevin struggles to secure the dinghy against the rising tide while Jenny works to protect the delicate heirloom seed trays from the driving spray.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

The wind catches the loose sail, threatening to pull the mast from the step while you fight it.

🔧 Kevin17:40

Hold, you bastard — hold.

Drop the halyard fast, gather the luff to spill wind, lash the sail bundle to the mast with the spare line before the next gust catches it.

💭 peek at the thought
The mast step split is breathing under this load — epoxy never cured in this humidity. If the spar twists another inch the doubler plate bolts will sheer. Need to kill the power in this sail before it breaks the boat.

🔧 Kevin17:44

Kevin — coil the halyard, secure the dinghy painter to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, grab the tool roll and walk back to the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Sail's dead, spar's still in one piece, mast step holding for now. Rain's hammering down proper. Hands are raw. Need to get under cover and think about that split before the next tide lifts the dinghy against it.

🔧 Kevin17:48

Kevin — pull the spruce spar clear, split it open along the grain, scarf a new sister piece in place with thickened epoxy and fiberglass tape, clamp it tight and leave it to cure under the porch roof.

💭 peek at the thought
Mast step split still breathing — epoxy failed in the damp. One more heave and the doubler plate could rip the tenons clean out. Need to sister it before the next tide cycle.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

The tide pools are filling rapidly, making the path back to the island slick and dangerous.

🌿 Jenny17:42

Move now, Jenny move.

Tuck the notebook and pencils into my waterproof bag and scramble up the black rock shelf toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't move now, I'll lose the notebook to the salt. The water is rising too fast.

🌿 Jenny17:47

Kevin? Are you in there?

Step inside the cottage and close the heavy door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming sideways now. I can't see the dock through the grey.
