The Heavy Air

Jenny sits on the porch steps, her ankle wrapped in gauze while the humidity clings to the skin. Kevin stands by the Yanmar engine, checking the fuel line for condensation in the still, grey air.

Kevin attempts to seal the northeast foundation of the cottage, but the extreme humidity makes the sealant sluggish and difficult to apply. Jenny spends the morning trying to reach Tom on the radio, but the heavy air still interferes with the signal clarity.

🔧 Kevin15:27

Jenny, come inside. Your ankle's looking worse in this damp.

Walk slowly down the dock steps, wipe hands on oilskin, check the Yanmar fuel line connection for condensation droplets forming in the humid air.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling, 986 and dropping fast. Humidity's too high for epoxy to cure proper on the dock repair. Need to get Jenny off her feet before the storm hits.

🌿 Jenny15:29

I'm fine, Kevin. Just watching the tide.

Trace the edge of a sea beet sketch in the notebook with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; a storm is coming and the wood is already too soft to fix the dock.

🔧 Kevin15:29

The tide's coming in quick. You should be inside, elevating that ankle.

Set down the wrench, wipe hands on oilskin again, take the notebook gently from her hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding it again, tracing lines like she's trying to map something steady. The tide's rising fast with that pressure drop.

🌿 Jenny15:31

Wait, I need to finish this sketch. The gland morphology here is different from the ridge population.

Grab the notebook back, feeling the damp pages stick together, then press it flat against my chest beside the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The notebook's pages are already stained with my sweat and seawater, but I can't let him take it now.

🔧 Kevin15:31

The morphology won't matter if you lose the foot. Notebook's not going anywhere. Come inside.

Keep one hand on the notebook, the other on her shoulder, steady pressure toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not letting go. The sketch matters more than the leg. She'd rather document the dying than survive it.

🌿 Jenny15:33

I'm coming, just stop pushing.

Stand up slowly, leaning heavily on my good leg as the ankle throbs in sync with the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm some fragile specimen, but I'm the only one actually seeing this island.

🔧 Kevin15:33

Good. Slow steps. Door's right there.

Walk beside her up the dock steps, one hand hovering near her elbow without touching, ready if she lists.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. That's what matters. The pressure's still dropping and the tide's pushing hard against the dock pilings.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:35

I can see.

Step over the threshold of the cottage, the smell of old wood and dried herbs meeting me.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too thick to breathe, and my leg feels like it's melting into the wood.
