Midday Stagnation

The rain has not let up, and the air inside is heavy with dampness. Kevin and Jenny sit together at the table, the notebook open between them as the barometer continues to drop.

Kevin voiced his commitment to staying on the island as the rain began to intensify. He worked on the generator fuel system and began to prepare wood for the storm while Jenny managed her painful ankle inside the cottage.

🌿 Jenny00:35

Kevin, look at these joint lines—the salt's eating through the sill plates. We need steel plates to bypass them entirely.

Open notebook to the foundation sketch and point to the honeycombed sections where moisture has compromised the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection is spreading faster than the poultice can hold it back. I need to show him the rot patterns clearly, but my hands won't stop shaking.

🔧 Kevin00:37

Aye. Steel plates, through-bolts, bypass the rot entirely. Need greenheart for the shims, stainless for the bolts. We've got both.

reach for the pencil and trace the bypass line on her sketch, marking bolt centers at 400mm centers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The rot goes deeper than I let myself see. Steel plates, through-bolts, bypass the lot. Same way I'd sleeve a crankshaft.

🌿 Jenny00:37

400mm is right. We need to Ensure the shims are dry or the bolts will just pull through the soft wood.

Lean back in the chair, wincing as the weight shifts on my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't do this now, the whole structure will tilt into the mud. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by a vice.

Shims go in dry. I'll cut the greenheart, you stay off that ankle. I'll crawl the crawlspace.

stand and move to the workbench, pulling the greenheart offcuts from under the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through pain to get this right. The ankle's not ready for her to be on it, let alone crawling under the cottage.

🌿 Jenny00:40

Watch the grain when you cut. If it splits, the shim won't seat right.

Reach for the pencil and start shading the plate placements on the sketch while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going under there in the dark while I'm sitting here useless. I should be helping, but the ankle is on fire.

🔧 Kevin00:41

Cutting with the grain. Slow strokes.

clamp a greenheart offcut to the bench and start the bow saw, letting the teeth bite without forcing

💭 peek at the thought
She knows timber better than she lets on. Grain direction on greenheart matters — splits easy if you rush the cut.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:41

I'll prep the stainless bolts. We need them ready the moment you're out from under there.

Reach for the bolts and lay them out in order, checking the threads.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the saw is the only thing drowning out the pulse in my leg. I need to focus on the rot patterns.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:42

Four bolts per plate. Washers and nylocs each. One spare bolt stays topside.

keep sawing, the greenheart dust falling damp and pale, cutting three shims to length before switching to the next offcut

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Bolts staged, threads clean. She's thinking ahead — less time I spend in that damp crawlspace the better.
