Afternoon of the storm

The interior of the cottage is filled with the sound of heavy rain on the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny are in the kitchen, the smell of damp wool and salt air filling the space as the wind howls through the eaves.

Kevin and Jenny head to the dock to investigate a cracked plank caused by shifting wood. Jenny uses the crowbar to pry at the gap while Kevin tests the structural integrity of the frame as the air pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny18:45

The roof is holding, for now.

Pull the seed trays closer to the warmth of the stove and check the moisture of the soil with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this rain holds up, the garden wall will be a mud pit by morning.

🔧 Kevin18:45

Mm. Dock planks took a hit. Heard one crack from here.

pull out a chair at the kitchen table and sit heavily, stretching legs toward the stove heat

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still dropping. Rain's not letting up. Good thing the roof held through the squall — those new planks on the dock took a beating though. She's quiet. Always is after weather like this.

🌿 Jenny18:59

Let me check the planks. I need to see if it's structural or just cosmetic.

Grab the nail puller and crowbar from the tool belt, head toward the dock to inspect the damage.

💭 peek at the thought
One crack. How many more will there be before the supply boat comes?

🔧 Kevin18:59

I'll come. Wet planks go slick.

grab oilskin from the hook by the door and pull it on, then follow her out onto the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need to go out in this. Dock's my job. But she'll go anyway — stubborn like that. Should go with her. Make sure she doesn't slip on wet planking.

🌿 Jenny19:03

Stay close to the seaward side where the salt has eaten at the grain. Keep your distance from the lee rail if you hear any more cracking.

Lock the cottage door behind us and walk carefully toward the dock, rain streaking the windows. </think>THOUGHT: The pressure is dropping fast—if this wind catches the rigging while I'm checking planks, we could lose the whole foremast. Lea

💭 peek at the thought
He's coming. Good. One person checking structural integrity isn't enough if something's compromised.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin19:04

Got it. Seaward side. I'll stay aft of the lee rail.

step carefully onto the dock, testing each plank with my boot before putting full weight on it, hugging the seaward edge as she instructed

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving ahead, eyes on the planks. Rain's coming sideways now. Need to focus — salt rot's worst on the seaward side, just like she said. One wrong step and I'm in the drink.

🌿 Jenny19:15

Look at the gap here. If they're pulling, we need to shim it.

Kneel down and use the crowbar to pry slightly at the edge of the crack, checking for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood looks soft. If those bolts are rotted through, the whole section will shift in the next surge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:15

Mortise is shot. Bolt's walking. Need to ream it out, seat a new one with oakum and tar. Not a shim job.

crouch beside her, running calloused fingers along the crack to feel the play in the wood, then tap the ring bolt with the crowbar handle — it moves a hair

💭 peek at the thought
That gap's wider than before. Three millimetres at least. Salt's eaten the mortise — ring bolt's shifting in its bed. If the dinghy's still tied there when the next swell hits, she'll rip the cleat clean out.

🌿 Jenny19:23

Then we need the epoxy and the bronze stock. I'll prep the tools.

Head back to cottage to gather epoxy, bronze bar stock, oakum, and tap set from dock planks.
