A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air in the cottage is heavy and humid, the 31°C heat pressing against the skin as the cloud cover noticeably overhead. Jenny sits on the porch steps, her swollen ankle throbbing with every shift, as she watches the sky darkening over the ridge. Kevin has fetched the hardware box from the crate and set it on the kitchen table, his focus on the failing window frames of the cottage. They know the wind is expected to shift northeast by midnight.

🌿 Jenny10:35

(To myself) It's coming again.

Sit on the porch steps, rubbing the swollen ankle, and watch the clouds darken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is so thick I can taste it, and my ankle is throbbing in time with the tide.

Wind'll shift northeast by midnight. Got the shutters?

walk to the porch rail and scan the ridge line, checking cloud movement against the tree tops

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's rolling in faster than the barometer said. She's tracking it same as me — ankle's talking to her before the glass does.

🌿 Jenny10:37

They're latched. I'll check the bolts again.

Stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and walk toward the kitchen to check the window frames.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the sky, never the rot right under our feet.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Take the stick. Don't make me carry you back up the path if it gives out.

step inside the kitchen, pull the spare 150mm stainless through-bolt and washers from the shelf by the east shutter, and check the threads are clean

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it more than she let on this morning. The red line was receding yesterday — swelling shouldn't be back up unless she overdid the trench walk.

🌿 Jenny10:39

I'm fine, Kevin.

Grab the sturdy walking stick from the corner and lean heavily on it as I inspect the window frame for gaps.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm fragile today. I'm just tired of the salt.

🔧 Kevin10:39

Bolt's here if the east shutter blows. Two minutes to fit it.

set the bolt and washers on the windowsill, then move to the radio shelf and flip the shortwave to 2182, listening for the supply boat or any traffic

💭 peek at the thought
Fine doesn't wince like that. But she'll bite if I push. Better to have the bolt ready for the shutter if the wind tears the latch off its mortise.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:41

I'll check the hinges too.

Run a hand along the wood of the window frame, feeling for soft spots where the damp is getting in.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes to fix a shutter, but months to fix the silence between us.

🔧 Kevin10:41

Top hinge first. Screws are pulling half a mil. Got longer ones in the crate if the wood takes it.

keep one ear on the radio static while turning the squelch knob, waiting for a voice through the noise

💭 peek at the thought
Frame's held three winters. Another won't kill it. But the hinge screws are pulling — saw the cedar wedge working loose last week. She's thorough. That's why the garden's alive.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:43

I'll use the longer ones.

Reach into the crate for the hardware box, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is soft. Everything on this island is turning soft.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:44

Leave it. I'll fetch the box.

cross the kitchen in two strides, pick up the hardware box from the crate, and set it on the table at waist height

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's on the floor. She's bending on a joint that won't bend. Stupid pride.
