The Falling Pressure

Warm rain drums against the corrugated roof of the cottage as the tide pulls at the pilings. Jenny sits on a crate, checking the swelling in her ankle, while Kevin watches the barometer, noting the mercury has finally begun to drop below 998pa. In the bay, a pale bloom of jellyfish drifts slowly with the current, translucent and ghostly in the rain-streaked swell.

The warm rain continues in a steady drizzle, drumming against the cottage roof. The tide is rising quickly, swallowing the deep fissure in the north-side dock beam that was exposed moments ago.

🌿 Jenny12:50

It's dropping. You're staring at that dial like it's going to tell you the future.

Gently press the edge of the swelling on the ankle, then reach for the notebook to sketch the jellyfish bloom in the bay.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping. He's focused on the mercury, but I can feel the shift in the air—it's getting heavier. My ankle is still too hot; the swelling hasn't receded enough to make the dock feel safe.

🔧 Kevin12:51

It's not the future. It's the next six hours.

Turn from the barometer and walk to the porch rail, scanning the bay for the supply boat's smoke on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the barometer. It won't tell me anything I don't already feel in my chest. But watching it beats watching her ankle.

🌿 Jenny12:52

They aren't coming today, Kevin. Not in this.

Make sketch: Jellyfish bloom in rain-streaked swell.

💭 peek at the thought
Six hours is a lifetime when you're waiting for a boat that's already five days out. He's looking for smoke, but the rain is just swallowing everything.

🔧 Kevin12:55

Didn't say they were.

Lean on the rail, watching the jellyfish pulse in the current, then glance down at her ankle where the red line sits under the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the pattern as well as I do. Three days out, the captain said. Today makes two. The swell's already building.

🌿 Jenny12:55

It's stable. For now.

Pull the trouser leg down to cover the red line and shift weight off the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He noticed. He finally noticed the line. He'll probably ask if it's okay, and I can't stand the vagueness of that question.

🔧 Kevin12:56

"For now" is the only kind we get.

Push off the rail and head inside to check the medical kit, counting what's left.

💭 peek at the thought
Stable's a word for rocks, not infection. The antibiotics finished yesterday. If the fever comes back, we're out of options.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:56

Don't waste the gauze. I can manage the dressing.

Stand up slowly, testing the ankle's weight, and limp toward the kitchen to check the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's counting pills again. He thinks the answer is always in a blister pack, not in the soil or the way the skin actually knits back together.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:58

Not wasting it. Counting.

Open the medical kit on the shelf, tilt it toward the window light — two rolls of sterile gauze, one tube of antibiotic cream half-empty, four ibuprofen tablets, the empty blister packs from the doxycycline and metronidazole courses.

💭 peek at the thought
She's managing alright. Right up until she can't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:58

The count doesn't change the biology, Kevin.

Set the pot of limpets on the stove and turn the flame up.

💭 peek at the thought
He's auditing the pharmacy. He hates not knowing exactly how much runway we have left. I just want to eat before the rain turns into a deluge.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin13:00

Mm.

Close the kit and set it back on the shelf. Watch her move around the stove — the slight hitch in her step, the way she braces the bad leg.

💭 peek at the thought
No. But it changes what I can do when the biology turns.
