The First Drops of Rain
The first heavy drops hit the tin roof with a sharp metallic ring. Kevin and Jenny sit in the dim light, the smell of wet earth filling the air as the storm finally breaks.
The rain continues in a steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof as the wind begins to shift from the northeast. Inside, the air is thick with humidity and the smell of damp earth and drying sea beet poultice. The pressure continues to drop steadily, signaling a more significant front approaching while the tide remains at its low-water mark.
Wind'll shift northeast by midnight. Generator shed tarp's loose on the east corner.

Take the lantern. You can't see the way anyway.
Wince as I shift weight on my ankle and reach for the heavy brass lantern on the table.

Thanks.
take the lantern from the table, check the wick is lit, and head out the porch door toward the generator shed

Watch the step by the water's edge!
Sit back in the kitchen chair, elevating my throbbing ankle on a stool, and watch the rain blur the glass.

Aye.
step carefully down the porch steps, lantern held low to pick out the slick boards, and pick my way along the garden path toward the generator shed

Don't stay out too long, the pressure is dropping.
Reach for my notebook and pencil, starting a sketch of the way the rain is hitting the stone wall.
