The Approaching Rain

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the wind picks up from the north. The smell of wet earth rises through the cracks.

Kevin braved the storm to secure the generator and check dock moorings, finding the bolts holding but the heavy weather line showing fresh chafe. Jenny examined her ankle wound, noting the infection boundary had not spread past the marked line, and verified the heirloom seed tin remained sealed and dry on the stove shelf.

Jen. Storm's closing in. Going to batten the generator and check the dock moorings. Back before high tide.

Pull on oilskin jacket, grab the heavy mallet and 19mm socket from the workbench, and head out the porch door toward the generator shed and dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Need to secure the generator shed and check the dock lines before the tide peaks.

Fine. Just don't get swept off the pier.

Lean back against the wall and pull the wool blanket tighter around my shoulders.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just running away into the rain. Let him. I can't even stand up without my ankle screaming, and he's worried about a socket wrench.

🔧 Kevin07:52

Won't. Rope's doubled. If I go, the dinghy goes with me.

Walk down the garden path toward the generator shed first, securing the ratchet straps on the fuel cans and checking the exhaust tape on the housing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's trying to be light about it. Her ankle's burning through that blanket. I'll check the dock fast and get back.

Jenny — close my eyes and listen to the rain drumming on the roof, feeling the throb in my ankle sync up with the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the equipment. He loves the machines more than the person sitting in the kitchen.

🔧 Kevin07:54

Kevin — walk the slick boards to the dock edge, testing each plank underfoot. Shine the headlamp beam along the waterline where the greenheart sister meets the original piling, looking for movement or washout.

💭 peek at the thought
Generator shed's battened down. Fuel cans strapped. Exhaust tape holding. Now the dock — tide's pushing hard against the pilings. Need to see if the north sister's taking water.

🌿 Jenny07:54

Jenny — reach out with a trembling hand and pull the heirloom seed tin closer to me on the stove shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
I can hear him out there, pacing those boards. I wonder if he can feel the island shifting beneath him, or if he thinks the bolts are actually holding.

🔧 Kevin07:56

Kevin — crouch at the landward cleat, run fingers over the middle bolt's washers. Test the nyloc nut with the 19mm socket — quarter turn resistance, still holding. Pull the heavy weather line taut against the cleat, check the splice for chafe.

💭 peek at the thought
North sister's solid. Oak wedges in the mooring ring mortise are tight — no play when I lean on it. The 150mm through-bolt on the forward sister joint shows no fresh rust streaks. But the landward cleat sistering... the middle bolt's weeping rust. Salt's working the threads. That's the one that'll go next time.

🌿 Jenny07:56

Jenny — slowly slide my leg out from under the blanket to inspect the bandage on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's probably out there right now, meticulously checking a nut while I'm in here vibrating with fever.
