Midday - Low Tide Prep

The tide is at its lowest point, exposing the rocks near the west shore. The heavy air presses down on the island as the barometer continues its slow drop.

The rain intensifies, a heavy drumming on the cottage roof as the west wind shifts. Inside, the air is thick with humidity and the smell of damp earth and woodsmoke. The sound of frantic scratching and the tearing of burlap echoes from the pantry area.

The barometer is at 976 and still falling. We need to get the trays completely under cover.

Walk over to the seed trays and carefully lift them from the window ledge to the center of the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is plummeting. If the rain turns into a real gale, those seed trays are going to be a disaster.

Already on it. Table's clear. You get the trays, I'll batten the porch shutters and run the generator lead inside before the rain hits sideways.

walk to the porch and start securing the storm shutters, checking each bolt and latch

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's dropping faster than I like. 976 and still falling means we've got hours, maybe half a day before this breaks hard. Seed trays first — she's right. Then the rest.

Thanks.

Set the trays down on the table and lean over them, peering closely at the pepper cells for any new signs of white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always "on it." Always fixing the perimeter, always bracing for the impact, while the actual life inside just... stagnates.

(quiet, through the screen door) Pepper cells holding?

work the heavy porch shutters closed, driving the bolts home with the mallet, then coil the generator lead through the window and tie it off to the stove pipe bracket

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Trays are safe. Now the porch, then the generator, then the radio aerial check. The wind's already backing southwest — she'll come in hard on the nose.

🌿 Jenny08:20

For now. But the humidity is a nightmare.

Gently poke the soil of a pepper seedling with a fingernail to check for root rot.

💭 peek at the thought
Just barely. One more damp morning and the fungus will win.

🔧 Kevin08:20

Copper spray's mixed on the shelf. One percent. Ready when you say.

finish tying off the generator lead, wipe hands on trousers, and step back into the kitchen to check the radio aerial lead where it penetrates the wall — tape's holding but the ceramic insulator's new, untested in a proper blow

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's the enemy. Damping-off spreads fast in this heat. She knows it. I'll check the copper sulfate spray after the generator's wired — hit the trays if she gives the word.

🌿 Jenny08:22

I'll do it after I've had a bit of coffee. I can't focus when I'm shaking.

Reach for the tin of coffee and the kettle, moving slowly to keep the weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He remembers the spray. He remembers the technical specs, but he doesn't ask how my ankle feels today.

🔧 Kevin08:22

Kettle's on the stove. I'll top it up.

lift the iron kettle, fill it from the tank tap, set it back on the wood stove and throw in two handfuls of the dry screw pine kindling to bring it up fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's running on fumes. Ankle's draining her. Coffee first, then the spray. I'll put the kettle on and check the radio while she drinks.
