Morning prep for the boat

Kevin and Jenny sit at the table as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. They check the inventory one last time before the supply boat arrives.

The humidity is like a physical weight, clinging to the skin as the sky darkens further overhead. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools near the cottage. The focus is entirely on the coming supply boat and the survival of the pepper seedlings and Jenny's worsening infection.

Diesel first. Two cans if they've got them. Everything else is noise.

Tap the inventory list on the table with a calloused finger, eyes on the diesel line.

💭 peek at the thought
Diesel's the only thing I care about from that boat. The rest we can stretch or do without.

And the antibiotics. If those don't come, the engine won't matter because my leg is gone.

Wince as I shift my weight, rubbing a hand over the throbbing heat of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks about fuel while I'm thinking about the rot in my skin and the mold in the trays.

Antibiotics second. Write it in.

Slide the pencil across the table toward her, the graphite catching on the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The doxycycline and metronidazole are down to nothing. If the infection flares again without resupply, no amount of diesel gets her off this rock.

🌿 Jenny09:06

I'm writing it. Along with the seed trays. I can't lose the peppers.

Pick up the pencil and scratch "ANTIBIOTICS" and "SEEDLING FUNGICIDE" onto the list in sharp, precise letters.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating this like a checklist for a machine. I'm not a machine.

🔧 Kevin09:07

Fungicide'll work if we get it dry. I'll reinforce the greenhouse corner with extra sand.

Pick up the surviving pepper trays, feel the weight of each cell, and carry them to the sheltered nook beneath the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Seed trays need more than fungicide now - damping-off's already eating three pepper plants. But she's holding onto hope, and that's worth something.

🌿 Jenny09:08

Thank you. Just... don't crowd them. They need the air.

Watch him move the trays, my eyes tracing the fine white fuzz on the soil line of the failing cells.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening. It's a start, even if he does it with that clinical distance.
