Night watch and supply boat readiness

Night has fallen. The cottage is lit by the storm lantern on the porch table. Kevin sits with the radio handset, monitoring 2182. Jenny lies on the blanket by the stove, ankle elevated. The barometer holds at 978 hPa. Outside, the tide is high and the wind is rising from the southeast. The supply boat is due tomorrow at high tide.

The humidity is a heavy weight over the island, smelling of salt and coming rain. The low tide is retreating, exposing the slick rocks of the southern pools. Inside the cottage, the rhythmic ticking of the Yanmar engine's cooling metal is the only sound against the walls as the wind picks up, whistling through the reinforced roof gaps.

You hear anything but the noise?

Shift my weight on the blanket and press a hand gently against the gauze on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. Southeast. If it picks up, it'll push the swell right into the dock. I hope he's actually hearing something on that radio and not just the static.

Nothing but static and the Maersk Edinburgh at 2200. She's 140 miles south, heading east. Captain sounded bored.

set the handset back in the cradle, glance at the barometer, then move to the porch door to check the wind direction against the treeline

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer steady at 978, wind SE and rising. Boat's due at high tide tomorrow — two-hour window. If the swell builds overnight, the dock's going to take a beating. Should've checked the stern spring chafe guard again before dark.

The treeline is leaning. It's shifting.

Reach over and touch the rusted side of the seed tin on the hearth.

💭 peek at the thought
Bored. At least someone is bored. I'm lying here counting the beats of the pulse in my leg and praying the boat doesn't decide the swell is too high.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Southeasterly's going to shove the swell straight into the dock face. Stern spring's the weak point.

step out onto the porch, pull the hood up, and walk down the path to the dock with the lantern to check the chafe guard and mooring lines under load

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the spruce tops are laying over southeast. Swell's already pushing into the cove. Tomorrow's high tide with that wind direction means the dock takes it broadside. The stern spring held last storm but the chafe guard was fraying.

🌿 Jenny10:28

Jenny — pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders and watch him disappear into the dark from the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the lines. He thinks the rope is the only thing keeping us here. I'm the one who's actually fraying.

🔧 Kevin10:31

He'll be back in an hour. Check the generator tether while I'm up.

reach for the seed tin, run a thumb along the corroded seam, then move to the wood stove to check the kettle for morning coffee

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's watching him go, blanket pulled tight. The tin's rusted side catches her fingers - she always touches it when she's worried, like when the boat's due. 978 hPa's holding steady, wind's SE and building. Should've said something about the chafe guard before he left.
