Supply boat approach at high tide
Kevin waits at the dock with lines ready as the supply boat appears on the horizon; Jenny tends the garden and ankle at the cottage.
Kevin stands at the seaward edge of the dock, binoculars pressed to his eyes as he scans the flat, thickening horizon for any sign of the supply boat. The humid midday air clings to his skin as he waits for the tide to drop, exposing more of the rocky shelf. Back at the cottage, Jenny limps to the kitchen to swallow her bitter antibiotic dose, then checks the water level once before stepping out onto the porch to stare at the heirloom seed tin, feeling the weight of the coming storm.
You stand on the seaward end of the dock, the bow line and stern spring coiled at your feet, eyes scanning the grey horizon where the supply boat should appear. The tide is high, water lapping the planks, and the wind carries the smell of diesel and rain. The VHF sits clipped to your belt, the shortwave antenna whipping above the mast.
Kevin — scan the horizon with binoculars from the seaward end of the dock, VHF clipped to belt, shortwave antenna whipping above the mast.

Kevin — cup hands around binoculars, wipe rain off lenses with sleeve, sweep the northeast bearing again. Key the VHF. "Sorrel Island to supply vessel, over." Wait. Static only. Clip it back.

Kevin — unclip VHF, key it once more. "Sorrel Island to supply vessel, standing by on 16. Out." Coil the bow line and stern spring neatly, lash them to the cleats with extra turns for the ebb. Check the storm anchor warp tension.

You move between the seedling trays on the porch and the garden beds beyond, limping on the driftwood cane, re-staking the loose shade cloth corner and checking the copper spray's effect on the pepper stems. The ankle is wrapped fresh, the poultice warm against the skin, and the second antibiotic dose waits in the tin mug on the stove shelf.
Jenny — limp back into the kitchen and drink the antibiotic dose from the tin mug.
