Evening at the Ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage door to head together toward the ridge. The sky darkens further, and the wind begins to pick up from the sea.

Kevin and Jenny reached the old shrine in steady rain and rising wind. Kevin read the weather from grass bend and lichen while Jenny examined the carved initials on the east face of the third stone, noting the McAllister 1847 marking.

🔧 Kevin23:11

Take the long way round the north side. Less exposed. Watch the lichen on the basalt — goes slick before it looks it.

pull the collar of my oilskin up, check the knife in my pocket, start walking toward the woods path that cuts behind the hill

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving without being asked. Good. The sky's got that bruised look the barometer warned about — 976 and rising my arse, that's a lie the glass tells before it breaks. Ridge walk in this wind means wet rock and no margin. She knows it. I know it. Neither of us says it.

🌿 Jenny23:13

I'm watching. Just don't trip over the roots.

Step over a protruding cedar root and keep the notebook tucked tightly under my arm to keep the pages dry.

💭 peek at the thought
The lichen is always slick here, he doesn't need to tell me how the island works.

🔧 Kevin23:13

Roots hold. It's the rot underneath lets go.

step over the same root, hand brushing the cedar trunk for balance, boots finding the worn deer track that cuts diagonally up the slope

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady on her feet. Better than she was month one. The notebook matters to her — more than dry clothes, maybe. That's something I understand without needing words for it.

🌿 Jenny23:15

Rot's everywhere on this island. Don't trust the pretty parts. Rot's everywhere on this island. Don't trust the pretty parts.

Shift my grip on the notebook, switching it from my left hand to my right so I can keep both hands free for balance, and glance at the base of the cedar where his fingers just pressed. </think>THOUGHT: Roots hold.

💭 peek at the thought
Roots hold. It's the rot underneath lets go. Kevin's hand moves to the cedar - he's checking what I can't see.

🔧 Kevin23:15

Noted.

keep climbing, the track narrowing to goat path through wind-shaped firs, the ridge line showing grey through the trees ahead

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the cedar. She's not talking about the island either. The wind takes the words and I let it. She knows I heard.

🌿 Jenny23:19

How long up there?

Keep pace alongside Kevin, my boots crunching through needles as I watch the barometer needle in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is getting closer. I can smell the salt in the air.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin23:19

Twenty minutes to the stones. Ten back if we cut the scree. Weather holds maybe forty.

lengthen stride slightly, the trees thinning to knee-high scrub, first real gust hitting us sideways off the cliff face

💭 peek at the thought
She's carrying a barometer in her pocket. Of course she is. The ridge exposes everything — wind, weather, the truth of what's coming. She wants to know how long we're committed to open ground.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:21

Then we better move faster than the rain.

Lean into the wind, pressing the notebook tighter against my ribs to keep it from catching the air.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty minutes? That's not enough time if the sky really opens up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:21

Rain's fine. It's the wind shift I don't like.

pick up the pace, boots sure on the wet rock where the soil gives out, the shrine's stone ring visible now against the darkening sky

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's not the problem. The wind's backing southwest — I felt it shift on the porch roof. That brings the swell that wraps the headland and fills the north channel. Forty minutes might be generous. She's not wrong to hurry.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:23

I see it.

Scramble up the last bit of scree, eyes fixed on the weathered stones of the shrine.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind always shifts before the real storm. He's always looking at the horizon.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:23

Watch the east side. Lichen's thick where the wind doesn't scour.

step onto the levelled ground of the shrine circle, boots finding the worn flat between stones, turn slow to read the wind direction off the grass bend

💭 peek at the thought
The stones don't care about hurry. They've held this ridge through centuries of worse than we'll see today. Names carved soft by salt and time — fishermen, keepers, women who waited. My grandfather's is third from the north. I've never shown her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:27

I'll check the names.

Move to the center of the ring, crouch low by a flat stone to run fingers over the faint carving of an old initial.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the lee side is the only place to stand without freezing.
