night at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny sit inside the stone ring as full dark settles. The lantern burns between them on a flat rock. The wind has dropped to a steady push from the west. They have not eaten since morning. The barometer continues to rise.

Kevin and Jenny leave the old shrine as the tide begins to turn and the air pressure drops. They head back toward the cottage under a thickening sky, feeling the heavy humidity signaling an approaching storm.

🌿 Jenny04:07

We need to go back. The tide is starting to turn.

Stand up, pocket the notebook, and take the lantern.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is aching from the limpets, and he's looking at me like I have the answers.

🔧 Kevin04:08

Yeah. Coming.

push up from the stone ring with a grunt, favouring the left side, and follow her back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tide's turning and the path back gets slick in the dark. My ribs are screaming and I'm running on nothing but adrenaline and bad coffee. But part of me doesn't want to leave this ring of stones — it's the first time in months the noise in my head has gone quiet.

🌿 Jenny04:09

Come on, slow. We can't afford to pull a muscle out here. Just keep moving. We'll eat when we get back. The wind's dropping. That's not a good sign. Your left side's still bothering you. Sit. Let me see if you can take some weight off that. Kevin? Can you put some weight on your left leg? Let me see your side. Just a quick look. We need to secure the garden tonight. The wind's shifting. Grab your gear. We've got work to do. Kevin? Hold still. We're going to the cottage. I'm not letting you walk another step like this. I'll carry you. The cot's two steps from the door.

Grab the lantern and start walking toward the cottage, keeping an eye on the dark path. </think>THOUGHT: His favor is obvious enough, but I can't stop now. Continue following the ridge path back toward the cottage, watching for loose stones

💭 peek at the thought
His ribs are still giving him trouble - I should have checked them.

I'm walking. Lantern's enough.

keep moving down the ridge path, left hand braced against ribs, right hand free for balance on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's not carrying me. Not happening. The ribs are bruised, maybe cracked, but my legs work fine. The path's steep in places and slick with rain — she'd go down with both of us. I've moved heavier loads up worse slopes with a busted shoulder. Just need to breathe through it.
