Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny meet on the cottage porch as the light thins. The barometer reads 1018 and rising. A pot sits on the stove, unlit. The dinghy rests at the dock with its new oarlock. The garden patch waits, cleared. They are tired, hungry, and the day is settling.

The stew simmers steadily as the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the cottage. Kevin and Jenny share their first meal on the island, the heat of the stove providing a relief from the day's dry warmth.

The water in the tank is good. I'm starving. Can we eat?

Walk into the kitchen, light the wood in the stove, and boil some water.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is aching from the hike. That succulent is strange—something I've never seen in the herbarium. I need to look closer at the leaf margins tomorrow in better light. I'm so hungry I could eat the sketches. I don't really have the energy to start the stove just yet.

Aye. Stew's in the pot. Just needs fire.

walk into the kitchen, open the wood box, and add two splits of dry wood to the stove beside the kindling Jenny lit

Good. She's hungry too. The stew will warm us both. Need to check the barometer log while water heats — 1018 rising means the high's holding, maybe fair weather tomorrow. Radio said rain later but the glass says different. Trust the glass.

It smells good. Thanks, Kevin.

Sit at the kitchen table, open the notebook, and start a rough pencil sketch of the succulent.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, some heat. The smell of woodsmoke is better than salt air. I hope the stew hasn't thickened too much while I was out. I need to sketch that plant before I forget the specific curvature of the ways.

Kevin — wash hands at the sink with cold water and a scrap of soap, then lift the pot lid to check the stew

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching that succulent from the spring path. Good — gets it down before memory fades. The stew's bubbling now. Should ladle bowls soon. My hands smell of rope tar and salt from the dinghy line. Wash first.

🌿 Jenny20:49

Is it almost ready?

Shade the waxy surface of the succulent leaves in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is finally catching on. My hands are still dusty from the path. That succulent is so thick—almost translucent—it must be storing a lot of water. I need to check if it's a Crassula variant, but I'm too tired.
