Waiting for the Boat

The supply boat appears on the horizon as the morning sun breaks. You both meet at the dock with the lists ready.

The air is heavy and still under the overcast sky, the humidity clinging to the dock planks. The tide has retreated far, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the damp sand of the shore. Kevin and Jenny stand by the dock, checking the final preparations before the supply boat's arrival.

Check the lines, Kevin. The tide is coming in fast and we'll lose the crate.

Wave a white rag at the boat while clutching the notebook to my chest.

way. I hope they have the replacement coax for the radio; I can't stand another week of static.

Bow line's on the starboard cleat. I'll take the spring.

walk to the starboard cleat and haul in the bow line, coiling the slack fast

💭 peek at the thought
Supply boat's early. Tide's flooding hard — crate'll float off if we don't snub it quick. Need the bow line first, then spring.

Watch the gap in there! Those planks are soft as way today.

Step onto the edge of the jetty to balance the weight as the boat nudges the dock.

He's moving faster than usual. Maybe he's as anxious about the storm as I am.

Step on the cross-braces, not the decking. I've got the spring.

throw the spring line to the deckhand, then snub it hard on the midships cleat to hold the boat off the soft planks

💭 peek at the thought
She's right on the soft planks — replaced the two worst but the next pair's spongy. Boat's heavy. If she steps through, she goes in the drink between hull and dock.
