Morning of the Defense

The sun is rising over the garden as you finish burying the tin barrier. The tide is beginning to climb steadily against the north cliffs.

Kevin checked the epoxy on the spruce spar and found it still tacky, then walked to the dock to fit the oarlock. Jenny sketched the sea beet morphology in her notebook and verified the spar's epoxy condition before heading to the north cliffs to observe the barometer trend.

🌿 Jenny07:22

I'm done with the cans. I'm going back in for the limpets.

Wipe muddy hands on thighs and walk toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually cramping now. I need to eat before I pass out in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin07:24

I'll finish the last two cans and meet you there.

Drive the final two tin cans into the soil at the garden's edge, packing earth firm around the rims, then wipe hands on jeans and walk toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She moves fast when the tide's turning. Good. The limpets'll overcook if she leaves them in the pot.

🌿 Jenny07:24

Don't forget to check the epoxy on the spar before you come in.

Enter the cottage and move toward the stove to heat the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical. It's almost exhausting. I wonder if he can tell I'm shaking a little.

🔧 Kevin07:26

Won't forget.

Walk to the spar leaning against the cottage wall, press thumbnail into the epoxy at the mast step split, check for tack or give, then follow Jenny inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's been curing since midday yesterday. Should be solid, but she's right to ask.

🌿 Jenny07:26

They're almost hot.

Pour the boiled limpets into two bowls and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. I can't think straight when I'm this hungry.

🔧 Kevin07:28

Kevin — pull out the chair, sit, pick up the small fork, and start picking limpets from shells, eating slow enough to taste.

💭 peek at the thought
Smell of brine and hot iron. My stomach's been eating itself since dawn.

🌿 Jenny07:28

They're a bit rubbery today.

Eat a limpet quickly, glancing at the notebook on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating them like they're a delicacy. To me, they just taste like chewy seawater and desperation.

🔧 Kevin07:30

They're food.

Chew, swallow, reach for the second bowl, and keep eating.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Pulled them off the lower shelves too late yesterday — tide turned fast. Still protein.

🌿 Jenny07:30

Right. Fuel.

Eat the rest of the limpets rapidly, then reach for the water pitcher.

💭 peek at the thought
The classic Kevin response. No adjectives, just facts. It's efficient, but it's a wall.

🔧 Kevin07:32

Mmph.

Finish the last limpet, push the bowl aside, and pour water from the pitcher into the tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thinking ahead. Yanmar needs running before the supply boat window closes.
