Midday meal and mast step decision
Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch. The boiled limpets and a tin of corned beef are set out on the table. The spruce spar leans against the wall, the split at its mast step still open. The Yanmar carburetor sits clean on the workbench. They eat and talk about whether to epoxy the spar split or fashion a wooden shim for the oarlock bracket mast step.
Kevin worked in the brutal heat to refine the fuel float, but the sloppy fit of the needle remains an issue. Jenny traveled to the north cliffs for sampling, battling the shimmering heat and the dampness of the seeds.
I don't trust the epoxy. Not after it sat tacky for two days in this heat. Give me a shim—something physical I can actually see holding.
Scoop a pile of limpets and corned beef onto a plate and eat quickly.

Shim it is. Got a piece of oak offcut in the crate by the dock. Hard enough to take the compression.
walk to the wooden crate on the dock planking, pry it open with the crowbar, and search for a suitable oak offcut

Just grab the first piece that fits the gap. We don't need a masterpiece, we need it to not snap.
Lean back against the porch railing and watch him, chewing slowly.

Kevin — pull a weathered oak offcut from the crate — about thumb-thick, grain tight — and carry it back to the porch

That'll work. Bring it over here.
Set the plate aside and stand up, walking over to the spruce spar to inspect the split.

Kevin — hand her the oak offcut and pull the block plane from my belt, then crouch beside the spar to measure the split width at the mast step

Make sure you taper the end. I don't want it wedged in so tight it splits the spruce further.
Hold the spar steady for him, keeping my fingers clear of the plane's path.

Tapering it now.
plane the oak offcut to a long shallow taper, testing the fit against the split every few passes until it slides in snug at the base and leaves a hair's gap at the tip
