Storm Evening
Rain hammers the roof and wind rattles the porch door. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with the heirloom seeds spread on paper, the rescued seedlings in trays beside them, and the broken tweezers pushed aside. The generator hums steady outside. A pot of corned beef and limpets simmers on the stove.
The pressure continues its slow drop as the overcast sky thickens, signaling the arrival of the storm. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling limpets and corned beef fills the air while the seed-sorting continues on the dry table. The wind picks up, rattling the thatch and the garden walls.
Generator sounds clean. Fuel diaphragm's holding.
Pick up a tomato seed packet, separate viable seeds from moldy edges onto clean paper.

Just make sure it stays dry until the boat comes.
Pick up the pencil and continue sketching the salt` on the sea beet leaf in the notebook.

Boat's not due for seven days. Barometer's steady at 1035. If it drops below 1005 with a southwest swell, we secure the tin and check the dinghy seacocks twice.
Continue sorting tomato seeds, setting viable ones aside in a dry row. Slide the compromised basil packets toward the edge of the table — mold at the margins, not worth the risk.

I'll move the seedlings inside the cottage just in case.
Reach for the seed tin and pull it closer to the center of the table.

Seedlings on the kitchen counter near the stove. Heat'll keep the damp off them.
Set aside a clean pepper seed, then pause. Reach over and tap the tin lid once with a fingertip — dry. Good. Resume sorting.

Don't put them too close to the iron, they'll shrivel before they sprout.
Open the notebook to a fresh page and sketch the sea beet's salt

Counter's wide. I'll put them on the far end. Away from the flue.
Finish the pepper packet. Start on lettuce — tiny seeds, hard to see against the paper. Pick up the broken tweezers anyway, try the blunt end.

Use your fingers for the lettuce, you'll just crush them.
Set the broken tweezers down and pick up the pencil.

Lettuce with fingers. Slow, but they stay whole.
Use thumb and forefinger to place each lettuce seed, one by one, in a spaced row. Keep the paper dry beneath my palm. Watch the rain streak the window — sideways now, driven by the gusts.

The wind's picking up. Check the latch on the door again.
Stand up and walk to the porch door to test the bolt.

Bolt throws clean. Strike plate's stainless, no swell on the jamb.
Keep sorting lettuce seeds. Glance up at the window — the garden wall's taking the full force. Second row's mulched. First row's straw holding. Seed potatoes deep enough.

I'm going to boil those limpets. I need the salt.
Walk to the stove and pick up the pot of limpets.

Broth's good for the cramp. Save a spoonful for the garden — calcium for the tomatoes.
Finish the lettuce row. Push the completed seed papers into a tidy stack: tomato, pepper, lettuce. Basil compromised — set aside. Reach for the corned beef tin, pry it open with the church key. Spoon fat into the simmering pot.

It's almost done. Just don't let it boil over.
Stir the pot with a wooden spoon, watching the steam fog my glasses.
