A meal for the find

You both sit at the cottage table to open the first corned beef. The barometer continues to drop as the evening air cools.

Kevin used the crowbar to pry open the waterlogged crate at the dock, revealing a cache of heavy-duty canvas. Jenny spent the day monitoring the southern transect and sorting the heirloom seeds to prevent the mold from spreading in the heat.

Pass me the can opener.

Reach for the tin of corned beef and set a plate on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is finally shifting. 1031 is a start, but that drop is too fast to be just a cooling evening. I'm starving.

Here.

pass the can opener to Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Hand over the opener. The tin's cold in my palm — good sign, seals held. My forearms still throb from the crowbar.

🌿 Jenny10:24

Thanks.

Carefully pierce the lid of the corned beef tin and begin to peel it back.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so terse today. Or maybe he's just as exhausted as I am.

Kevin — set the tin on the table between us, pull a fork from the drawer

💭 peek at the thought
Watch the lid curl back. Meat looks right — pink, fat rendered. No off smell. Six tins. That's protein for weeks if we're careful.

🌿 Jenny10:26

It's a bit late for a feast, but I'll take it.

Finish opening the tin and slide the slab of meat onto the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
I can smell the salt and fat. My stomach is actually cramping. I wonder if he's noticed how fast the pressure is falling.

🔧 Kevin10:26

Not a feast. Fuel.

slice off a thick piece with the fork, eat it plain

💭 peek at the thought
Cut a slice. The fat's firm, not rancid. Salt hits the tongue clean. Haven't eaten proper since breakfast. Stomach's been knotted.

🌿 Jenny10:28

You're going to get sick eating that plain.

Reach for the chopped sea beet and place a small pile of the salty greens next to the meat.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is just utility with him. Fuel, structural failure, load-bearing. Nothing is ever just... a meal.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Kevin — take a forkful of sea beet with the next piece of corned beef

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt on salt. The beet cuts it. Fork up a bite of each together.
