Waiting out the swell

You both gather inside the kitchen as the rain intensifies outside. The barometer continues to drop.

Kevin and Jenny prepared breakfast in the cottage as the rain began to intensify outside. Kevin attempted to fashion a ceramic insulator from a spare spark plug to repair the radio but struggled to match the dimensions, while Jenny boiled the collected limpets.

Barometer's 977 and falling. Supply boat's three days out. We'll be lucky if they make it in five. Radio's down — insulator's gone. Gonna try building a replacement from the spark plug ceramics. Need the epoxy tub and heat.

pull the epoxy tub and spare spark plug from the shelf, set them on the kitchen table near the stove warmth

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I like. Storm's not waiting for the supply boat. Radio's dead until I fix the insulator — ceramic spark plug bodies might work if I epoxy them right, but humidity's killing cure times. Jenny's quiet. She knows what this means.

🌿 Jenny10:24

Just don't get the epoxy on the table. I'm making breakfast.

Put the limpets in a pot of water on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating the radio like a puzzle to be solved while the world is literally dissolving outside. I can't keep staring at these trays; the air is too thick.

🔧 Kevin10:26

Floor it is. Coffee first?

move to the floor by the stove, crack the spare plug's ceramic insulator out with the metal file, careful not to shatter it

💭 peek at the thought
She's practical. Always practical. Breakfast first, radio second. The limpets'll be rubber by the time water boils but she knows that. I'll work on the floor.

🌿 Jenny10:26

Yes. Please.

Set the limpets to boil and reach for the coffee jar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so precise with the ceramic, but he can't seem to find the right frequency with me. I need the coffee, though. My head feels like it's full of wet wool.

🔧 Kevin10:28

Kevin — scoop coffee into the pot, set it on the stove beside the limpet pot, then return to the ceramic shards on the floor

💭 peek at the thought
Coffee. Right. The jar's sealed — good. She's making do with what we have. Limpets, coffee, rain on the roof. This is the life we chose. Or the one that chose us.

🌿 Jenny10:28

Jenny — watch the pot, waiting for the limpets to bubble.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the ceramic cracking is so sharp against the rain. I wonder if he's thinking about the mainland, or if he's just thinking about the insulator.

🔧 Kevin10:30

Kevin — file the ceramic insulator into a rough cylinder matching the old insulator's diameter, checking against the mast bracket on the wall

💭 peek at the thought
Steam's starting to curl off the water. Limpets'll be done soon. Coffee'll take longer. I've got the ceramic core out — smooth, conical, about an inch long. Needs shaping to fit the mast bracket. File first, then test fit, then epoxy and bake on the stove. Humidity's the enemy — sawdust mix last time held. Might do it again.

🌿 Jenny10:30

It looks right.

Pour the boiling limpets into a bowl and set it on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the diameter. Everything has to be a perfect fit for him. I'm still just a piece that doesn't quite slot in.
