Afternoon Lull

The rain tapers to a mist, leaving the island smelling of wet earth and salt. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the tide begins to turn, exposing more of the rocky shelf below.

The sun beats down on the island as the temperature hits 30°C. The tide is out, exposing the rocky floor of the northern shelf and tide pools. Kevin and Jenny are working through the heat, focusing on the garden needs and the dock repairs before the supply boat arrives in a week.

🔧 Kevin01:58

Morning. Tank's near full. Radio check at noon if the mist lifts. You want the tomato trays first or the lathe?

walk to the kitchen table where the seedling trays sit, wipe condensation off the wood stove top with a rag, and set the kettle on to boil

💭 peek at the thought
The mist makes everything feel close. Good day for the lathe work inside — spare injector seat won't mind the damp. Jenny's got the seedlings ready on the table. We said we'd do this together.

🌿 Jenny01:59

The tomatoes. They need the shade moved before the sun actually breaks.

Jenny picks up a pencil and begins to sketch the serration of a sea beet leaf in her notebook, her hand moving with practiced precision despite the fatigue.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, but if I move those trays now, I'll drop them.

🔧 Kevin02:01

Right. Tomatoes. I'll move the shade once they're in.

pick up two seedling trays from the kitchen table and carry them out to the cold frame in the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's already drawing. Sea beet again. The detail in her hand — she sees things I don't. Tomatoes first then. Shade cloth's already on the porch roll.

🌿 Jenny02:02

Be careful with the frame, the wind is still catching the corners.

way stands up slowly, joints popping, and follows him out onto the porch to watch the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He moves too fast for someone who hasn't slept a full night in three days.

🔧 Kevin02:02

Got it. Stakes first.

set the trays down carefully on the cold frame shelf, then grab the mallet and four short stakes from the porch corner and drive them into the frame's outer edges to pin the corners down

💭 peek at the thought
Frame corners have been lifting since the last blow. Should've staked them properly. She notices everything.

🌿 Jenny02:03

Make sure they're deep. The soil is still soft today.

Jenny steps down from the porch and kneels beside the frame, checking the tension of the wood with her hand.

💭 peek at the thought
If he drives them too shallow, the whole thing will Shift when the first storm hits.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Angling them in. Deeper bite.

drive each stake at a forty-five degree angle with the mallet, checking they're firm before moving to the next, then unroll the shade cloth and secure it over the frame with the existing ties

💭 peek at the thought
Soft soil means easy driving but poor hold. Need to angle them, use the mallet proper. She's right — always is about ground.

🌿 Jenny02:05

The tension looks good. It won't catch the wind like last.

way reaches out to smooth the edge of the shade cloth, ensuring it isn't pinching the delicate leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's getting the angle right, even if he's rushing it.
