Midday Gathering
The rain slows to a mist as the midday heat peaks. You meet inside the cottage to escape the smell of damp wood and salt air.
The warm rain continues as a steady drizzle, keeping the air heavy and the ground damp. Kevin spent the afternoon at the dock, struggling to secure the shim for the ring reinforcement, but the slick wood made the bolting work difficult. Jenny stayed indoors, meticulously drying the damp heirloom seed tin and sorting the moldy edges of the salvaged packets.
Jenny — set the two bowls of boiled limpets on the kitchen table and pick up a fork.

Kevin — walk to the porch pump, scrub hands with the grit soap, dry them on the canvas towel, then sit at the table.

They're a bit tough. I should have boiled them longer.
Peel a limpet meat from the shell and eat slowly, watching the rain bead on the window glass.

They're fine. Good chew to them.
Pick up a fork, work a limpet free, eat it slow. Reach for the water jug and pour for both of us.

The salt gets into everything here.
Take the glass of water and take a long drink, feeling the cool liquid hit my throat.

Aye. Gets in the threads. The contacts. The skin.
Eat another limpet. Wipe fingers on the cloth napkin. Gesture at the window with the fork.
