Morning Mist and Seeds

The thick mist presses against the window glass, muffling the sound of the garden. Jenny sits at the wooden table, spreading out the damp heirloom seeds on paper to dry while Kevin checks the water level in the tank.

The mist clings to the cottage like a damp wool blanket, muffling the sound of the surf against the pilings. The air is heavy with humidity, smelling of salt and rotting vegetation. The tide is rising steadily, pushing the water higher up the lower steps of the dock.

Tank's holding. Three ninety-seven.

Set the dipstick back in its bracket, wipe hands on thighs, move to the table opposite her and watch the seeds spread.

💭 peek at the thought
The mist carries salt and woodsmoke. She's careful with those seeds — folding the paper edges, not rushing. My hands know the tank's weight by now; three ninety-seven litres feels different than three ninety. The Yanmar's rhythm from the dock still hums in my fingertips.

It's enough. If the boat delays again, we'll ration before they arrive.

Use tweezers to carefully separate a clump of tomato seeds, ensuring they don't tear on the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the water, but I'm looking at the life in these seeds.

Aye. Got flour, corn beef, spuds in the ground. Coffee'll run first.

Pull the chair out slow, sit heavy, let the silence stretch while she works the seeds. Reach for the notebook on the table edge, flip to the soil pH page without looking.

💭 peek at the thought
She says it steady. No panic in it. The tweezers are steady too — her fingers don't shake even cold. Ration. The word sits different coming from her than it would from me. I've seen what forty minutes in black water does to a man's thirst. She hasn't.

🌿 Jenny01:39

The soil is still too acidic in the north bed. I need to find more lime before I plant anything.

Sketch a quick Detail of the sea beet morphology in the margin of the notebook, noting the way the edges curl in the humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about spuds like they're already there when the garden is just mud.

🔧 Kevin01:39

Shell midden at the spring. Two sack loads did the south bed. Tide's rising — six hours till it drops again.

Tap the pH log page with a calloused fingertip, 5.5–5.8 staring back. Push the notebook back toward her center.

💭 peek at the thought
North bed's 5.5. She logged it herself three weeks back. Lime means the shell midden at the spring — heavy haul, wet path, tide-dependent. She's sketching sea beet margins while the tomatoes wait. The pencil moves like she's got time.

🌿 Jenny01:41

The south bed can wait for now. I won't risk the heirlooms on that pH level.

Pick up a handful of dried seeds, feeling the weight of them, checking for any remaining dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the work is the point, but the plants are what's failing.

🔧 Kevin01:41

Lathe's warm if you want the injector seat done before the tide turns. Give me an hour.

Stand, chair scraping stone. Move to the porch door, pause with hand on the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Five-five kills tomatoes slow — blossom end rot, stunted roots, the lot. But the heirlooms are dry now, viable, sitting in her palm like something sacred. The south bed's already limed. She's not talking about the south bed. She's talking about the injector seat I haven't machined, the dock bolt I haven't permanently fixed, the garden wall's third course I haven't raised. The things that wait while we wait.

🌿 Jenny01:43

I'll stay here. The seeds need to be turned.

Lean over the table, watching the mist thicken against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving to the next thing to fix while I'm trying to grow something.

🔧 Kevin01:43

Back before the tide drops.

Step out onto the porch, pull the door shut behind me, walk the gravel path to the workshop with the mist dripping off my shoulders.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't come. The mist swallows the garden path, the dock, the spring track. She'll turn seeds and sketch sea beet edges and not say she's cold. My back knows the lathe's vibration, the way bronze sings under the tool when the cut's true. The injector seat's a small thing. Necessary. The dock bolt's larger. The garden wall larger still. She measures trust in handfuls of dry seeds.

🌿 Jenny01:45

Jenny — trace the edge of a sea beet sketch with a finger, own if any of these will actually survive the salt.

💭 peek at the thought
An hour is never an hour when you're waiting for the world to break.
