The Approaching Squ

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. The tide is at its lowest point, leaving the island floor slick and strange.

Kevin hauled the dinghy up to the shingle beach as the tide retreated, securing the lines while Jenny moved the heirloom seed trays inside the cottage to protect them from the rising heat and humidity. They prepared coffee together while the air grew heavy.

🌿 Jenny03:49

The tide is out too far, Kevin. We need to move the dinghy higher up now.

Grab the crowbar and point toward the exposed reef.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that surge comes in now, the lower shelf won't hold.

🔧 Kevin03:50

Crowbar's overkill. Grab the bow line — I'll take the stern. We walk it up the rollers.

walk to the dinghy at the dock, unhook the stern line from the cleat, and wait for Jenny at the bow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the spring tide's pulled further than the charts show. If the wind shifts southwest with this pressure, the surge'll drive water over the dock planking before we can react. The dinghy's light empty; a two-foot lift'll put it clear of the worst.

🌿 Jenny03:51

Fine. Just don't let the hull scrape the rocks.

Walk to the dinghy, grab the bow line, and pull toward the high tide.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so stubborn about the tools, but the water doesn't care about his methods.

🔧 Kevin03:52

On me. Slow. Watch your footing — the green's slick.

lean into the stern line, walking backward up the slipway, taking the weight so the hull clears the rocky ledge

💭 peek at the thought
She's strong but the dinghy's dead weight on wet stone. If she plants her feet wrong on algae she'll go down hard. I'll take the strain on the stern quarter — keeps the bow off the sharp ledge and lets her steer.

🌿 Jenny03:53

I've got it. Watch the swell.

Wrap the bow line around my hand and haul the dinghy up the slick rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
If I slip here, the line goes down and the boat goes with it.

🔧 Kevin03:54

Coming over the hump. Ready to brace.

heave hard on the stern line, pivoting the dinghy's stern over the rocky ridge, then step sideways to guide the hull onto the shingle beach above the high-water mark

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the bow moving. The keel's clearing the worst of the ledge now — just the rounded stern to get over the hump, then it's sand and shingle the rest of the way. My boots are holding on the wet stone. One more heave.

🌿 Jenny03:55

It's set. Let's get those trays inside before it really opens.

Drop the line and wipe the salt from my palms, looking back at the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
It is high enough for now, but the air feels like a wet blanket.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:56

I'll take the tomato and pepper trays. You get the basil and lettuce.

walk to the porch, pick up the two heavier seed trays (tomato and pepper), and carry them inside to the kitchen table near the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy's safe above the reach of any surge this storm brings. The seed trays are the real vulnerability now — weeks of germination work, and the porch offers no shelter from driving rain. She's already turning toward the cottage. I'll take the heavier trays; she's faster with the delicate ones.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:57

I've got the small ones. Move.

Pick up the basil and lettuce trays and set them on the table next to his.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking from the pull, and the humidity is making everything heavy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:58

Done. Coffee?

reach for the sealed jar on the shelf, pull out two enamel mugs, and set them on the table

💭 peek at the thought
All four trays on the table, dry and warm. The stove's still holding heat from this morning. Rain's hammering the porch roof now — proper downpour, not the drizzle we've had. Good call, Jenny. The basil would've drowned in ten minutes out there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:59

Please. Black.

Sit at the table and watch the rain lashes against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
I need the caffeine to stop shaking, but hunger is biting at me again.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:01

Four minutes.

spoon coffee into the enamel mugs, pour hot water from the kettle on the stove, set a timer by feel, and lean back against the counter while it brews

💭 peek at the thought
Real coffee. The last of the jar from the supply crate. Been saving it for a moment that felt like it mattered. This qualifies — storm breaking, trays safe, both of us dry. I'll measure it proper. Two heaped spoons each, water just off the boil. Let it steep four minutes.
