Opening the Sea Crate

The two sit at the kitchen table with the crowbar between them. The smell of salt and rotting wood fills the small room.

Kevin wedges the crowbar into the seam of the waterlogged crate, leaning his full weight against the iron. The wood groans, splintering as the salt-saturated planks are forced to pry apart. Jenny watches the gap closely, ready to catch any shards that might fly toward her face.

🔧 Kevin07:30

Want first swing, or shall I?

wipe my hands on my thighs, reach for the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
The crate sits between us like a verdict. Salt-crusted wood, iron bands rusted thin. Whatever's inside has been breathing seawater for weeks — maybe months. Could be anything. Could be nothing. My hands still sting from the crowbar.

🌿 Jenny07:31

You go. I'll watch the seam for splinters.

Jenny pulls back a chair and leans forward, eyes fixed on the crate's rusted nails.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too eager. He'll split the wood before he even gets a purchase.

🔧 Kevin07:32

Alright. Brace.

plant my feet, swing the crowbar down hard on the lid seam near the corner — try to pop it open with one blow

💭 peek at the thought
She's not just watching for wood — she's watching me. The way my grip tightens, the breath I hold before the strike. She knows I don't like surprises in sealed things.

🌿 Jenny07:33

Watch the splinters!

Jenny flinches back instinctively, hand raised to shield her face as the wood groans.

💭 peek at the thought
way much force. The wood is going to shatter, not yield.

🔧 Kevin07:34

One more.

lever the crowbar into the cracked seam, pry upward with body weight, widen the gap enough to see inside

💭 peek at the thought
Good hit. The iron band snapped. Wood screamed. She flinched — natural — but her eyes didn't leave the gap. Smart.

🌿 Jenny07:35

Careful, it's splitting.

Jenny leans in, peering into the widening dark gap, her breath held.

💭 peek at the thought
it's giving, but the wood is so soft from the salt.

🔧 Kevin07:36

Canvas wraps. Oilcloth. Looks like ship's stores.

shove the lid fully off, reach in and pull the top bundle free — heavy, wrapped tight

💭 peek at the thought
The lid gives way in a cloud of salt dust and rot. Smell hits me — wet canvas, oilcloth, something sharper underneath. Machine oil? Solvent? My nose knows that scent. Engine stores. Spare parts. Maybe tools.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:37

Open it. Let's see.

Jenny reaches into the crate, her fingers brushing the cold, stiff oilcloth.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavy. If it's just more hardware, I might lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Fuel. Or lubricant. Sealed tin.

turn the cylinder in my hands, scrape salt from the stencil with a thumbnail, try to read the marking

💭 peek at the thought
She's close enough I feel the heat of her forearm against mine. The oilcloth cracks as I unwind it — stiff as board, layered with salt. Underneath: a tin cylinder, soldered seams, stenciled lettering half-erased by brine. My fingers find the raised edges. Not parts. Not tools.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Look for a label. Is the seal intact?

Jenny leans over his shoulder, artworking at the faded ink under the salt crust.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's oil, I can stop the generator. If it's food...

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:40

1943. Shell diesel oil. Five gallons. Seal's clean.

set the tin on the table, reach back into the crate for the next bundle

💭 peek at the thought
Salt flakes away. Stencil reads: SHELL DIESEL LUBRICATING OIL SAE 30 — 5 GAL. 1943. War issue. The solder ring around the cap is unbroken. No rust bloom at the seam. This oil has been waiting eighty years.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:41

What's in the next one?

Jenny wipes her hands on her apron, watching him reach back into the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
Five gallons of old oil? That's gold for the generator if it hasn't turned to jelly.
