The Storm Breaks
The wind howls through the eaves as the first heavy lashing hits the roof. You and Jenny sit by the stove, watching the barometer needle drop toward the glass.
The air is heavy and still, the heat of the wet season clinging to the cottage as the barometer has begun its slow, steady drop to 1022 hPa, signaling that the approaching storm is moving faster than predicted. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks and the sea-beet clusters on the northern shelf.
Barometer's at 968. Dropping eight millibars an hour. Eye passes north, we leave Friday 0630. Passes south, we ride it out.
pour two mugs of the last good coffee, set one in front of Jenny without asking

The pressure is falling too fast for a safe crossing anyway, Kevin.
Reach for the mug, wrapping both hands around the ceramic for warmth, and stare at the needle on the dial.

Didn't say safe. Said 0630 if the eye passes north.
sit back in my chair, cradle my own mug, watch the needle tremble toward 965

If the swell is up that high, the boat won't be able to reach the dock anyway.
Take a slow sip of the coffee, letting the bitterness hit my tongue, and listen to the wind rattle against the stone walls.
