Approaching Storm

You meet at the cottage door as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof.

Kevin successfully bolted the mast step into place while the epoxy was still tacky, securing the dinghy. Jenny prepared the limpets and sea beet for lunch and checked the seedlings for damage as the air pressure dropped.

Barometer dropped another four millibars since noon. Squall's moving faster than I figured.

Wipe resin-sticky hands on my trousers, leaving dark smears, and step back from the doorway to let her in.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here early. Barometer was right. Need to get the mast step bolted before the epoxy skins over wrong — but the dock's going to be treacherous in this. Jenny's at the door. She's been quiet since breakfast.

It's not just moving faster, it's hitting us. Get inside before you're soaked. Did you actually bolt the tenon, or are we still relying on tacky glue?

Walk past him into the kitchen and set the pot of limpets and sea beet on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Four millibars? He's finally paying attention, but he's still treating the mast like a suggestion rather than a structural failure.

Drilled three holes. Bolted two. Third bit snapped in the chuck. Tide came up over the gunwale before I could find the spares.

Follow her in, pull the door shut against the wind-driven rain, and drop onto the bench opposite the pot. Pick up a limpet shell, work the meat out with the tip of my knife.

💭 peek at the thought
She saw the dock. She knows I didn't finish. Sharp tongue, sharper eyes — same as always. The limpets smell good. My stomach growls before I can stop it.

Two bolts aren't a solution, Kevin, they're a gamble. We can't leave it like that. Eat your breakfast first—you're no use to the boat if you're shaking from low blood sugar.

Pour two bowls of the sea beet and limpets and slide one across the table toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
A snapped bit. Of course. Now we have a half-finished fix and a boat that's practically a sieve if the wind catches it wrong.
