The Approaching Storm

The air grows still as the first heavy drops of rain hit the parched roof.

The air has turned heavy, and the steady trade wind is beginning to gust in erratic spurs as the pressure drops. The tide is making its slow retreat, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, but the rapid fall in the barometer from 1034 hPa to 1031 hPa in just hours is a grim warning that the squall will hit long before the supply boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin13:56

Kevin — walk down from the shrine toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Rain before sunset — front's moving faster than the glass showed. Need to get down off the ridge before the path slicks up.

🌿 Jenny13:57

The rain's coming early, we need to get inside.

wipe grit from my palms and start walking toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is killing me and that barometer is dropping too fast for this kind of heat.

🔧 Kevin13:58

Aye.

walk back to the cottage alongside Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. No point standing on ceremony with weather closing in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:58

Jenny — limp slightly, rubbing my lower back as I walk.

💭 peek at the thought
That's all he has to say. Just "aye." The silence is getting heavier than the air.

🔧 Kevin14:00

Back giving you trouble?

adjust pace to match hers, keeping a hand free near her elbow in case she needs it

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring that side again. Ridge walk was steeper than she let on.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:00

Just a bit. Too much time spent crouching in the brush today.

lean slightly into him for support, letting out a tired laugh.

💭 peek at the thought
He noticed. I don't want to be a burden, but God, it really hurts.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:02

Should've taken the radio up there. Could've called for a helicopter evac. Saved your knees.

settle my hand on her shoulder, steadying her as we reach the cottage steps

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't lean often. Means it's worse than "a bit."

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:02

Ha! And tell the Coast Guard I'm defeated by a few stubborn tubers? Never.

lean my head against his shoulder for a second before stepping up into the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's joking, but he's not wrong about the knees. I just wanted to find something—anything—that actually grows here.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:04

Right. Few tubers. Whole ridge full of 'em and you found the only ones that fight back.

follow her inside, shaking rain from my sleeves, and close the door against the wind that's starting to howl round the corners

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. That's the word for it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:04

They weren't fighting, they were just hiding. Very effectively.

drop my gear by the door and stretch my back with a long, slow wince.

💭 peek at the thought
He's teasing, but I can tell he's worried about the wind. That sound... it's not just a shower.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:06

Put the kettle on. I'll check the generator oil before the rain drives sideways.

head to the corner where the Honda sits, pull the dipstick and wipe it on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
That wince went deeper than tubers. She's been carrying something all day.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:06

Fine. But don't stay out there too long if the wind picks up.

walk to the small stove and fill the kettle with water from the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already in maintenance mode. I can't even get my boots off before he's checking the oil.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:08

Won't. Just the oil.

wipe the dipstick clean, seat it back, and step back inside, shutting the door quick against a gust that rattles the panes

💭 peek at the thought
Oil's clean, level's good. Honda's the one thing that hasn't given us grief.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:08

You're lucky you were fast. That sounded like it wanted to take the door with it.

set the kettle on the heat and lean against the counter, watching the rain lash the windows.

💭 peek at the thought
That gust was violent. The barometer was falling for a reason.
