Opening the crate

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The waterlogged crate sits on the floor, ready to be pried open.

Kevin spends the afternoon sealing the mast step with epoxy and checking the dinghy's pump. Jenny explores the interior ridge in search of edible tubers but finds little beyond dense brush. The heat remains oppressive as the barometer begins to drop.

🔧 Kevin13:46

You're back. Find anything on the ridge?

lean the crowbar against the wall by the crate, wipe hands on thighs, walk to the water tank and splash cold water on face and arms

💭 peek at the thought
My forearms are burning from hauling that crate. The tide's turning and I can smell rain coming. Good thing we got it inside when we did. Jenny's been gone all afternoon on that ridge — wonder if she found anything worth the walk.

🌿 Jenny13:46

No. Just a lot of dense brush and things that would probably kill us if we ate them.

Drop the gear by the door and lean heavily against the whitewashed wall, rubbing the small of the back.

💭 peek at the thought
My lower back is screaming. Nothing but scrub and disappointment up there.

🔧 Kevin13:48

Coffee?

go to the wood stove, check the kettle, add a stick of wood, set two mugs on the counter

💭 peek at the thought
She's wiped out. That ridge walk is brutal — steep, overgrown, no path. She pushed hard today. The crate sits there full of tins and we're both too tired to care much. Coffee first. Then we decide.

🌿 Jenny13:48

Please. Black.

Slowly slide down the wall to a sitting position on the floor, stretching the legs out.

💭 peek at the thought
I need the caffeine, but I need to sit down more. I can't look at that crate yet; the thought of more damp things makes my skin crawl.

🔧 Kevin13:50

Coming up.

measure coffee into the French press, pour hot water from the kettle, set the timer on the stove for four minutes, lean back against the counter and watch steam rise

💭 peek at the thought
She's done in. Floor's cold stone but she doesn't care. I'll get the coffee going and let her breathe a minute. The crate can wait.

🌿 Jenny13:50

I'm going to organize those tins once I can actually stand up again.

Rest head back against the stone wall and close eyes for a moment.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so quiet. The silence is starting to feel like a physical weight in the room.

🔧 Kevin13:52

Take your time. They're not going anywhere.

press the French press plunger down slow, pour two mugs, carry one over and set it on the floor beside her knee, stay standing with my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
She'll organize them by protein content and expiration date, same as she did the seed packets. It's how she holds the line. I'll let her have that. The crate's heavy with water weight — three times normal — but the tins inside looked sealed. Salt-blurred labels but intact. That's calories we didn't have this morning.

🌿 Jenny13:52

Thanks.

Reach for the mug and wrap both hands around it, letting the heat soak into the palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being kind, but it feels distant. Like he's talking to a patient instead of his wife.

🔧 Kevin13:54

Kevin — take a long swallow of coffee, lean back against the counter, watch the porch light through the window as the afternoon dims

💭 peek at the thought
Steam curling off the mug. Her fingers white-knuckled around it. The radio on the shelf behind me clicks with static — barometer's falling, 1031 and dropping. Supply boat's due in five days but the coast guard said seven to ten. I didn't tell her. She didn't ask. The coffee's bitter and hot and exactly what we both need.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:54

The barometer is falling. We might get rain tonight.

Take a slow sip of the coffee and look up at him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's staring at the light, not at me. I wonder if he's thinking about the boat, or if he's just as exhausted as I am.
