← Day 19

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the woods

Midday work splits

Kevin remains at the dock finishing the dinghy repairs; Jenny walks into the woods toward the interior ridge.

Kevin struggled to move the heavy waterlogged crate across the dock as the tide began to rise. Jenny spent the afternoon scouring the interior ridge for tubers but found only inedible roots and dense brush.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You sit on the dock planking, epoxy smell fading behind you, the crowbar and tools laid out neat. The tide pushes higher, slapping the pilings. You have a few hours before Jenny returns.

🔧 Kevin13:36

Kevin — drag the waterlogged crate and canvas rolls up the dock toward the cottage, then walk to the cottage to check the shortwave radio

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's coming up fast. Need to get the crate and canvas off the dock before the water reaches them. Radio check wouldn't hurt either — barometer's rising, but the coast guard said seven to ten days. Might as well know where we stand.

🔧 Kevin13:40

Kevin — sit at the radio desk in the cottage, power on the shortwave, and run a channel 16 listen for any coast guard or supply boat traffic

💭 peek at the thought
Crate and canvas are clear of the tide line. Radio's next. If the supply boat's still days out, I need to know now — not when Jenny asks.

🔧 Kevin13:44

Kevin — log the barometer reading (1036 hPa, rising), check the water tank level, then walk to the garden with the lime and sand to mix mortar for the wall

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing on 16 but static and a distant French trawler working Channel 10. Supply boat's not calling. Coast guard isn't either. Battery's at 60% — can't run it long. Should log the barometer, check the water tank, and get the mortar mixed for the wall before Jenny gets back. She'll want to start early.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You move uphill through damp spruce needles, eyes on the thin soil between shale outcrops. The air is cooler here, wind off the cliffs. You're looking for wild yam or anything edible the ridge might yield.

🌿 Jenny13:34

Jenny — stop and kneel by a shale outcrop to examine the soil and root systems.

💭 peek at the thought
My calf is screaming, but the soil looks promising here. If there's a tuber, it'll be tucked right under these shale edges.

🌿 Jenny13:38

Jenny — make sketch: unknown ridge climber

💭 peek at the thought
That's not yam. Too fibrous, wrong leaf structure. But the way it's clinging to the rock... I haven't seen this specific morphology in the previous surveys.

🌿 Jenny13:42

Come on, you stubborn things. Show yourself.

push through a thicket of scrub toward the higher ridge line.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is killing me. I need to find something substantial soon or I'm just walking in circles for the sake of it.
