Storm Supper

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage kitchen as rain hammers the roof. The generator sits silent on the porch. They have boiled limpets, chopped sea beet, and six cans of corned beef. The barometer needle has dropped further. They eat by lantern light while the wind tests the shutters.

The air is heavy and humid as the barometer continues its slow drop despite the heat. The tide retreats from the shore, exposing the slick rocks where the limpets cling. Kevin and Jenny share a modest meal of limpets and sea beet, the salt of the sea lingering in the air as the weight of the coming storm looms.

Eat. Before it gets cold.

Set the bowl of sea beet and the pot of limpets on the table and sink slowly into a chair.

💭 peek at the thought
My back is killing me. I can't even think straight, but the smell of those limpets is the only thing keeping me grounded right now.

"Ate already." (I take the bowl anyway, spoon limpets into it, add a fist of sea beet. The corned beef tin sits unopened between us.)

eat from the bowl, watching the lantern flame dance

💭 peek at the thought
The generator failure is eating at me — water in the fuel, the tank vent breathing in this wet air. I should've drained the carburetor last week. Now we're down to lantern light and whatever charge the radio holds.

🌿 Jenny15:02

You're a liar.

Lean back in the chair and rub the small of my back, watching him eat.

💭 peek at the thought
He says he's already eaten, but he's eating. Typical. He's probably just too tired to admit he's starving.

🔧 Kevin15:02

Maybe." (I chew, swallow. The limpets are rubbery, salty, good.) "Generator's flooded. Carburetor bowl's got water in it. Need to pull it apart, blow the jets, let the bowl dry. Tomorrow, if the wind drops.

keep eating, slower now, the warmth spreading through my chest

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Haven't eaten since the biscuit at dawn. The generator took everything out of me.

🌿 Jenny15:04

Let it stay flooded. Just eat.

Reach for the bowl and take a small portion of limpets and sea beet for myself.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the carburetor. Always a part to fix, a jet to blow. He's treating the generator like it's the only thing on this island that needs attention.

🔧 Kevin15:04

"Mm." (I push the corned beef tin toward her.) "Open that. Knife's on the shelf.

keep eating, the rhythm of it settling something in my shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The Honda isn't going anywhere tonight. Neither are we.

🌿 Jenny15:06

I've got it.

Stand up slowly, reach for the knife on the shelf, and carefully pierce the lid of the corned beef tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Protein. I need it if I'm going to be able to move tomorrow without seizing up.

🔧 Kevin15:06

Vacuum held.

watch her work the lid off, the smell of salt and fat rising in the lantern light

💭 peek at the thought
The tin sighs when the blade breaks the seal — vacuum still holding after god knows how many months in that crate. Good sign.
