Afternoon Gathering

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the rain continues to fall. The barometer continues its slow descent, and the tide is now high mark.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets at the kitchen table while rain streaked the window. Jenny reported losing five seedling cells to damping-off fungus. Kevin secured the generator lashings and shimmed the porch door hinge against the coming weather.

🌿 Jenny11:56

The barometer is still dipping. We should probably double-check the porch door seals before it really opens up.

Walk into the kitchen and stir the pot of boiling limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
I can smell the limpets boiling. God, I'm starving. I wonder if he saw the bagged seedlings in the bin or if he'll just pretend the garden is fine.

🔧 Kevin11:56

Aye. Bottom hinge needs a shim. I'll sort it after I check the generator lashings.

walk to the porch door, crouch to examine the bottom hinge and the gap beneath it, then straighten and head to the generator to check its lashings

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's at 1010 and falling, tide's high, and that porch door has been sticking on the bottom hinge since the last blow. If the wind shifts round to the southwest it'll drive rain straight under it.

🌿 Jenny11:58

Fine. Just... don't stay out too long. The air is getting heavy.

Ladle the limpets into two bowls and set them on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always sorting, always fixing. He doesn't see the grey fuzz on the stems, just the gap in the wood.

🔧 Kevin11:58

Won't be long.

step out onto the porch, pull the generator's lashing rope tight, add a second turn around the rail and finish with a round turn and two half hitches, then return to the porch door with a cedar shim and hammer to drive it under the bottom h

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy air, falling glass, high tide — she's reading it same as me. The generator's lashed to the porch rail but the rope's seen two winters. Won't hurt to double it.

🌿 Jenny12:00

Food's on the table. Come in when you're done.

Sit heavily in the kitchen chair and begin eating the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He moves with such certainty. I wish I felt that certain about the things I plant. I'm shaking a little; I need to eat.

🔧 Kevin12:00

Coming.

finish the last half hitch on the generator line, pick up the hammer and cedar shim from the porch shelf, step inside and close the door, then pull out the chair opposite Jenny and sit down to eat

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. The ankle, the fever, the chick — it's all sitting in those shoulders. Food first, then the door. The shim's in my pocket, hammer's on the porch shelf.

🌿 Jenny12:02

They're a bit rubbery today.

Push the bowl of limpets slightly toward the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us is almost as thick as the humidity. I want to tell him about the peppers, but I don't want to hear him say it's just the weather.

🔧 Kevin12:02

They're fine.

pick up a limpet with the small fork, pull the foot free, chew slowly while watching the rain streak the windowpane

💭 peek at the thought
Rubbery means they boiled too long or the water wasn't rolling hard enough when they went in. Or the big ones just take more time. Doesn't matter — protein's protein.

🌿 Jenny12:04

I had to bag the peppers. And two of the lettuce cells. Damping-off.

Lean back in the chair and stare at him, waiting for a reaction.

💭 peek at the thought
"They're fine." The universal answer for everything he doesn't want to analyze. I'm practically vibrating with hunger and exhaustion.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:04

How many left?

reach for another limpet, shell scraping the bowl

💭 peek at the thought
Five cells lost. Three pepper, two lettuce. That's the second hit this month. The tarp's holding but humidity's too high for seedlings — no airflow under it. Should've raised the sides days ago.
