Morning Day 207

The trade wind remains steady as the island warms, and the smell of damp earth lingers in the air.

Kevin rigged a ridge line to lift the seedling shelter tarp and improve airflow, confirming draft at the corners. Jenny cut out the damping-off lettuce and pepper cells and bagged them for burning. The barometer continues rising.

🔧 Kevin12:38

Going to check the seedling shelter ventilation. The tarp might be holding damp air against the trays.

walk to the garden shed where the seedling shelter sits, crouch to examine the ventilation gaps cut in the sides, feel for airflow with the back of my hand

💭 peek at the thought
The fungal fuzz on the pepper and lettuce cells is spreading despite the rising barometer. Moving the healthy trays bought time, but the humidity's still too high in these trays. Need to check if the ventilation gaps I cut in the seedling shelter are actually drawing air through, or if the tarp's trapping moisture underneath.

🌿 Jenny12:40

Check the corners. If the way is sagging, the air just sits there and cooks.

Walk to the edge of the porch, lean against the stone wall, and watch him work with the canvas.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's right, the humidity will kill the whole batch tonight. I need to get that air moving now.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Corners first. If the center's sagging, I'll run a ridge line off the shed frame.

crouch at the windward corner of the seedling shelter, lift the tarp edge to check the gap underneath, feel for air movement across the soil surface of the trays

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the corners are where the tarp sags lowest. If the wind can't push through there, the whole shelter becomes a steam box. Should've run a ridge line to keep the center peaked.

🌿 Jenny12:42

Use the ridge line if you have to. I need those trays to breathe.

Reach into the tool kit, grab the shears, and start cutting away the most heavily damping-off lettuce cells.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the fungus is faster. I am losing cells every hour.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:42

Ridge line it is. Back in a minute with the tarred twine.

walk to the shed, retrieve the ball of tarred twine from the tool hook, tie one end to the shed's ridge beam, pull the line taut across the shelter's center to the garden wall stake, cinch it off with a trucker's hitch, check the corners li

💭 peek at the thought
She's cutting the losses clean. No sentiment. The right call — those lettuce cells won't recover and they'll spread spores to the peppers. I'll rig the ridge line from the shed's ridge beam to the garden wall stake, pull the tarp taut so the corners lift and the gaps actually breathe.

🌿 Jenny12:44

Thanks, Kevin.

Carefully pluck the diseased cells from the tray, placing them into the newspaper bags for burning.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the structure. The structure is fine; it's the biology that's failing.

🔧 Kevin12:44

Air's moving now. Corners clear.

crouch at the windward corner again, hold the back of my hand low over the pepper tray soil to confirm the draft, glance at the barometer reading on the porch through the window

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge line holds. Tarp's peaked now, corners lifted a good hand's width. Air's moving through the gaps — can feel it on my knuckles. She's got the diseased cells bagged. Pepper trays still show fuzz at the soil line but the tomatoes are clean. Might save half the peppers if the airflow holds through the afternoon.

🌿 Jenny12:46

It's a start. I'm going to burn the infected ones before the spores spread.

Wipe the shears on a GR and walk toward the fire pit.

💭 peek at the thought
1013 hPa and rising. The pressure is helping, but the roots are already mush.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:46

I'll check the tomato trays for soil contact.

turn to the raised shelf, run fingers along the tomato seedling stems, gently lift any lower leaves resting on the soil surface, brush a fingertip of dry sand around the base of each stem to wick moisture

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Fire's the only sure kill for damping-off spores. She'll burn the bags downwind of the garden. I should check the tomato trays one more time while she's at it — make sure none of the lower leaves are touching soil. That's how it starts.
