Afternoon Meeting
Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the sun begins its slow descent. The air is still hot and the supply boat is still eight days away.
The south-east wind sharpens, driving salt spray across the dock as the tide continues its retreat. Kevin and Jenny work to secure the dinghy, but the rot in the main beam makes the mooring ring unreliable under heavy strain. A sudden, violent squall breaks the heat, bringing a wall of horizontal rain and lurching gusts that force them to abandon the work and retreat to shelter before the boat is pulled from itsings.
The wind is picking up. It's going to be a rough night.
wipe the grit from my palms with a dusty forearm and lean against the rotting wood of the jetty.

Barometer's holding at 1012. But the fall's stopped. That's the tell.
Wipe bronze filings from my thumbs onto my trousers and stand, squinting at the horizon where the swell lines thicken.

It's too humid for the garden to work anyway.
kick a loose piece of dock wood and look out at the dinghy swaying at the end.

The dinghy's engine mount bolts held at full throttle yesterday. She'll ride it out if the lines hold.
Walk to the landward end of the dock, crouch, and test the mooring ring with both hands — feeling for play in the mortise.

The planks are soft, Kevin. We can't trust the weight of the boat.
trace the rot in the main beam with my boot, feeling the fibers give way under the pressure.

Replaced two planks last month. The core's sound another meter in. Ring's bolted to the sister beam, not the face.
Straighten, pull the 19mm socket from my belt, and crank the ring's backing nut down three hard turns — watching the washer bite into fresh timber.

The wood doesn'tization how tight the bolt is when the salt eats through.
wipe the sweat from my eyes and look at the grey wall building over the reef.

Then we sister it with the new rope. Two turns round the piling, clinched to the cleat. Belt and braces.
Uncoil the half-inch three-strand from my shoulder, measure two arm-lengths, and whip a bowline round the landward piling — pulling it tight against the barnacle crust.

It's a patch, not a repair. The wind's testing the knots.
check the tension on the line with my hand, feeling the vibration of the swell.

Patch holds until the next one. That's the job.
Cinch the bitter end round the cleat in a figure-eight, then add a rolling hitch for insurance — testing each knot with body weight before moving to the next.
