After the Squall

The rain has slowed to a heavy drizzle, leaving the air thick with the smell of salt and wet earth. Kevin and Jenny gather inside, dripping and shivering, to check the damage to the dock and secure the provisions for the night.

The evening air is warm and still, the light onshore breeze carrying the scent of the salt. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling limpets and drying mint fills the small space. Jenny focuses on the test strips on the wooden table, her brow furrowed, while Kevin sits opposite her, the tension of the dock still on his mind.

🌿 Jenny22:43

We need to move the line higher up tomorrow morning. The wood isn't holding.

Jenny hangs her wet jacket by the wood stove and begins to sketch the pattern of the rot on the dock's edge.

💭 peek at the thought
My knees are screaming, and the dock is literally turning to mush. If that ring pulls out of the stone, the dinghy is lost.

🔧 Kevin22:44

Aye. First light. Bring the drill and the long auger — we'll know how deep the rot goes.

walk to the kitchen and set the kettle on the wood stove, then pull out the notebook and sketch the dock's landward mooring ring with measurements for the morning

💭 peek at the thought
The dock's landward mooring ring is still the priority. If that goes, the dinghy goes with it. Jenny's right about the rot — but moving the line higher won't help if the timber's gone all the way through. Need to inspect the mortise at first light, see if there's sound wood left to bolt into. If not, we're driving new piles or anchoring to bedrock.

🌿 Jenny22:45

I'll get the auger. But we need to check the pH in the lime beds first.

Jenny rubs her stiff knees and moves to the kitchen table to find the soil test kit.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the drill. I'm thinking about the fact that the wood is like wet cardboard now.

🔧 Kevin22:46

Lime beds aren't going anywhere. The mooring ring might.

pull a chair to the table and open the notebook to a fresh page, tapping the sketch of the dock ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the garden on her mind even soaked through. The lime beds can wait — the dock can't. But she's not wrong to track the soil. If the pH drifts, the tomatoes stall and we lose the season. I'll humour her, then steer back to the mooring.

🌿 Jenny22:47

If the pH is too acidic, the potatoes won't take regardless of where the boat sits.

Jenny sighs and pulls the water test strips from the kit, laying them out on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the structural failure he doesn't see the soil chemistry changing under his feet.

🔧 Kevin22:48

Run the strips. I'll be on the dock at first light with the auger.

stand and walk to the porch door, pulling on the damp jacket hanging there

💭 peek at the thought
She's digging in. The potatoes are in the ground, the dock's coming apart, and she's testing water for soil that won't matter if the supply boat can't tie up. But arguing wastes breath. Let her run the strips. I'll check the mooring ring myself at dawn — auger, epoxy, new bronze bolt if the threads are gone. She can have her pH.

🌿 Jenny22:48

It's still raining, Kevin. Just stay inside for five minutes.

Jenny reaches out to touch his sleeve, but her hand stops short, and she turns back to the test strips.

💭 peek at the thought
He's retreating. Always retreating into the mechanics of things because the conversation is too heavy.

🔧 Kevin22:50

Five minutes.

turn back from the door and sit at the table opposite her, hands flat on the wood, watching the test strips

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand stopped short. That's the second time this week. The rain on the porch roof is steady, drumming on the tin. She wants me to sit. The dock will still be rotting at dawn. Five minutes won't sink it.
