Morning Breakfast

Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with the warm limpets and coffee. The tide is beginning to turn, and the barometer remains steady.

Kevin spent the morning working on the Yanmar lower unit, carefully fitting the bronze sleeves to ensure a seal. Jenny focused on the garden, tending to the seedlings and checking the soil conditions near the cottage.

🔧 Kevin22:08

Mooring ring next. Landward side. Want to come or stay?

eat a limpet, sip coffee, wipe fingers on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are good — hot, salty, sweet. Coffee's strong. Barometer holding at 1009. Tide turning means slack water in twenty minutes, then flood. Good window to check the landward mooring ring before the current picks up. Jenny's quiet. She's been quiet since the dolphins. Not unhappy quiet. Just... there. I'll let it be.

🌿 Jenny22:10

I'll come. I need to check the tide line on the rocks anyway.

Jenny finishes her coffee, stands up with a groan, and grabs her notebook and the waybar.

💭 peek at the thought
My knees are aching from the damp floor, but if that ring fails, the dinghy goes with the tide.

🔧 Kevin22:10

Right. Boots by the door.

drain the last of the coffee, set the tin cup aside, pull on boots

💭 peek at the thought
She's stiff. Back again. Won't say it. Notebook means she's still logging the Carex transect or the sea beet morphology. Waybar's for the scramble down to the tide line. Good. Two sets of eyes on the ring. And she'll see things I don't — plant shifts, bird sign, the sea's mood.

🌿 Jenny22:12

I've got mine.

Pull on boots and step out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't believe I'm actually going to plant those potatoes today. I just need to get through the dock work first.

🔧 Kevin22:12

(quiet, to himself) Crowbar. Bolt. Hammer.

grab the crowbar and the new bronze bolt from the shelf, pull on oilskin jacket, step out onto the porch and close the door behind him

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's colder out there. Southeast chop building. She moves careful — favouring the left side. I see it every time. She won't let me rig a proper brace or a walking stick. Pride, or maybe she thinks admitting it makes it real. I'll carry the crowbar and the new bronze bolt. Heavy enough to be useful, light enough not to slow me.

🌿 Jenny22:14

Don't forget the torque wrench if we're actually seating the bolt.

Walk down the porch steps toward the dock, squinting against the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in his checklist mode. It's the only time he's actually predictable.

🔧 Kevin22:14

Tool roll. Be right there.

turn back inside, grab the torque wrench from the tool roll by the lathe, jog down the porch steps to catch up

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 35Nm on the spec. Salt eats threads if they're not tight. Torque wrench is in the tool roll by the lathe. Should've thought of it. Good she did.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:16

I'm not racing you.

Walk at a steady pace toward the dock, clutching the notebook to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am today. My joints feel like they're filled with wet sand.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:16

Didn't say you were.

fall in beside her, crowbar in one hand, torque wrench and bolt in the other, eyes on the rock ahead

💭 peek at the thought
Not racing. Just don't like her walking ahead alone on wet rock with a bad back and a rising tide. Wind's picking up. Spray hits different at dock level — horizontal, stings. She's got the notebook tight. Good. Means she's not using that hand for balance.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:18

Look at the tide line. It's higher than yesterday.

Point toward the dark, wet band of rock marking the high-water mark.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware. He doesn't even see the way the spray is patterning the limestone.
