Evening at the standing stones

Kevin and Jenny walk up the ridge path together as the light slants low. The ring of weathered stones stands on the exposed shoulder, carved initials faint in the lichen. A heavy rusted tin marked 'E' sits among the stones where it was left. The wind carries salt and the smell of drying kelp from the shore below. They pause at the circle's edge.

Kevin and Jenny descend from the shrine to the cottage, the air heavy with the 31°C heat. The tide is low, exposing the slick rocks of the northern shelf, as they carry the tin of heirloom seeds away from the rising humidity that threatens to seep through the metal.

🔧 Kevin23:36

Still sealed.

walk to the tin and pick it up, turning it over in my hands

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's still there. Good. Means nobody's been up here since we left it. The stones don't care about time — they've seen worse than us.

🌿 Jenny23:37

The air is getting in everything. It's heavy.

Run a thumb over the rusted seam of the lid, checking for any give in the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the seal is the problem, but I can feel the humidity through the metal anyway.

🔧 Kevin23:38

Lid's tight. No give.

hold the tin out to her, palm up

💭 peek at the thought
She's feeling the pressure drop too. The barometer's been steady but the air knows before the needle does.

🌿 Jenny23:38

It doesn't matter. The humidity is too high.

Take the tin from his hand, feeling the weight of the grandmother's seeds against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lid is tight, the seeds inside are just sweating in their own rot.

🔧 Kevin23:40

The shed's drier. Could wax the seam.

glance at the stones, then back to the path down

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The seeds we dried on the shelf — they're breathing damp air every night. The tin's only as good as its seal, and rust eats seals.

🌿 Jenny23:40

The shed is still damp. We need to go back.

Tighten my grip on the tin and look out at the grey clouds gathering over the cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
Wax won't stop the fact that the whole island is breathing on us.

🔧 Kevin23:42

Tarp first. Then the tin.

turn and walk down the ridge path toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving. The wind's shifted — smells like rain within the hour. The garden tarp's got one corner loose; saw it flapping earlier. Should've fixed it when I had the chance.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:42

The tarp is already flapping loose anyway.

Follow him down the path, the tin tucked tight under my arm to keep it from the salt air.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for the next fix while the foundation is just rotting away.

🔧 Kevin23:44

I'll get the ladder. You take the tin to the kitchen.

stride toward the cottage, heading for the workshop porch where the ladder leans

💭 peek at the thought
Two things at once. The tarp's beating itself to shreds in this wind, and the tin needs wax before the humidity ruins what's inside. The garden's got tomatoes at true leaf — they'll take the hit if the cloth tears loose.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:44

I'll put them on the high shelf.

Walk toward the cottage, the metal tin clinking softly against my hip.

💭 peek at the thought
If I leave the seeds in this air, they'll turn to mush before the boat comes.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Kevin — grab the ladder from the porch, carry it to the garden, and prop it against the stake line to reach the flapping corner of the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
High shelf keeps them off the damp floor and away from the rat's reach. Good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:46

Be careful on that ladder, the ground is slick.

Step into the kitchen, set the tin on the wooden table, and listen to the wind pick up.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the tarp he doesn't see the sky.
