Evening Meal

You both return to the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The smell of boiling limpets fills the small kitchen.

Kevin and Jenny attempted to tube-feed the shivering seabird chick using a syringe and rubber tube from the med kit, but the chick was too weak to swallow and the feeding failed. The chick remains in its box on the porch, still hungry and cold.

🔧 Kevin01:36

Limpets are ready. Pull up a stool.

ladle two portions of limpets into wooden bowls, set one on the table for Jenny, sit on the porch step with mine and eat slowly

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets smell good, rich with corned beef fat. My stomach's been tight all day. The chick didn't take the fish — crop still empty. If it doesn't eat by morning I'll need to tube it, and I've never tubed a seabird. The barometer's steady at 1015. Supply boat's due in five days. Dock ring still shifts under load. I should check the mortar on the garden wall before dark.

🌿 Jenny01:37

The barometer is rising, at least.

Take a small bite of the limpet, looking out at the dark clouds gathering over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired my hands are shaking, but the salt in this is almost too much.

🔧 Kevin01:38

Rising steady since noon. If it holds, we'll get a clear window tomorrow. Good for the dock ring.

finish the limpets, wipe the bowl with a finger, stand and walk to the porch to check the seabird chick's box

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the ridge. Clouds stacking up there — not the usual evening build. Could be a front pushing through overnight. Rising barometer should mean clearing, but the wind's been variable all day. Chick's box is on the porch. Need to check it before I turn in.

🌿 Jenny01:38

I need to plant the peppers tomorrow. Regardless.

Set the bowl down and reach for the rusted seed tin on the table, my thumb tracing the inscribed 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees a window for work, I just see another day of the air being heavy to breathe.

🔧 Kevin01:40

Cold nights'll stall them. Wait three days, soil warms another degree.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her thumb on the tin

💭 peek at the thought
Peppers need heat and the nights are still cooling into the low twenties. Damping-off took the last batch. She's stubborn about the planting calendar — won't shift for weather. The tin's seal held through the storm. Still don't know what 'E' stands for. Esther? Eleanor? Someone's initial. Not mine. Not Jenny's.

🌿 Jenny01:40

The chick is hungry, Kevin. It can't wait three days.

Stand up and walk to the box on the porch, leaving the tin cold on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always waiting for the island to give him permission to move a muscle.

🔧 Kevin01:42

I'll tube it. Need the small syringe from the med kit and the red rubber tube.

walk to the porch, crouch beside the box, lift the chick gently — lighter than a wrench, all bone and down — and hold it against my chest while reaching for the med kit on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The chick doesn't care about soil temperature. Crop empty since morning. Tubing's the only way now — syringe and soft tube, get slurry past the glottis. I've watched the vet do it on the supply boat once. Never done it myself. Hands were steady on the Yanmar at forty knots. Different kind of steady.

🌿 Jenny01:42

Be careful. It's shivering.

Reach for the med kit, my fingers fumbling with the latch until I find the syringe.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so small. If I squeeze too hard, it'll just break.
