The Morning Shift

Jenny monitors the trays by the stove as Kevin enters with the wobobbly rack. The tide continues to pull out, exposing the northern shelf.

Kevin examined the loose dock mooring ring and found the mortise widened by rot, requiring new wedges and epoxy to secure it before the supply boat arrives. Jenny fed the seabird chick a small amount of formula via syringe, though its crop remained mostly empty, then turned to the garden where she mixed lime into the beds and discovered damping-off fungus spreading to two more lettuce cells.

Rack's got a bent leg. I'll shim it with a cedar offcut.

Set the wire rack on the kitchen floor near the stove, then pull a cedar shim from the porch pile and tap it under the short leg until the rack sits level.

💭 peek at the thought
The rack wobbles because the left rear leg is bent from when I dropped the generator on it three months ago. Should've straightened it then. Low tide means the northern shelf is exposed — good for limpets if the swell stays down.

Jenny is quiet for a moment.

Kevin — walk back out to the porch and scan the northern shelf through the binoculars hanging on the hook, checking how much reef is exposed and whether the swell is hitting it clean.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the trays, not me. The damping-off on the peppers and lettuce has her spooked. Right call moving them inside — humidity's brutal today.

The chick is still empty, Kevin. I need to feed it before the boat comes.

Pick up the way and the warm water, then walk to the chick's box.

He's looking at the horizon again while I'm looking at the dirt.

🔧 Kevin02:58

I'll mix the formula. You tube it.

Turn to the kitchen counter, pull the seabird formula tin from the shelf, measure two scoops into the stainless cup, add warm water from the kettle, and whisk until smooth with the small fork.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The supply boat's three days out if it shows. The chick's crop has been empty for days — it won't last another week without calories. I should've built the feeding tube setup last week when I had the PVC.

🌿 Jenny02:58

Okay, not too hot.

Pick up the syringe, draw up the formula, and kneel by the box.

💭 peek at the thought
The bird is so small, if it doesn't take this, I don't know what.

🔧 Kevin03:00

Warm, not hot. I'll check the dock ring while you feed.

Hand Jenny the filled syringe, then step out the back door and walk toward the dock, eyes on the mooring ring in its mortise as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
The formula's the same as yesterday — still no improvement. If the chick doesn't start taking on its own by tomorrow, I'll have to consider tube-feeding it overnight, even if it stresses it.

🌿 Jenny03:00

Easy, little one.

own insert the syringe into the chick's beak, watching the throat for any sign of movement.

💭 peek at the thought
The way is so flat. Come on, swallow, just swallow.
